  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Chain Type Engine Rattle on 2013 40 hour 310cc

Husqvarna
C Class
Hi
Just started up 310 red top after 18 months lay-up.
Noticeable engine rattle at idle, get quieter when revs rise (sounds like chain hitting something inside).

Has anyone experienced this and if so, what was the cure / cost?

Any other issues I should be looking for?

Thanks

It sounds like the cam chain no longer has tension. Cam chain adjuster may be failing. I'm sure someone has a fix using a manual version, or could replace with stock. Not sure what the rebuild is on your current one. Should be at pretty easy fix but if not taken care of cams could skip a tooth and that would be catastrophic.

Noisr traced to defective clutch.
However it seems there is also cam wear and oil contains metal.
Has anyone rebuilt a 310 engine completely?

If so what parts are available anf from where and at what cost?

Basket is OK, rest is mullered.

you sure your friction plates aren't stuck to the steels? this happens sometimes when they kinda dry out from non-use. (And I feel remiss for not thinking of that- re: your thumpertalk thread).

you can sometimes rescue the clutch by just letting it soak (and hitting the lever every once in a while). I saved my kids ktm125 clutch by filling the crankcase with diesel (kerosene would be even better) and letting sit for a couple of days. move in gear with the clutch pulled in to gauge your progress.

if any of the friction material comes off and sticks to the steel- a new clutch pack is needed.

if you're storing a bike, kick it over once every season a couple of times and actuate the clutch a few times. rotate the tires too.

Many thanks for the parts lead. Are there any other husky parts sources that have a large range of engine parts?

Many thanks.
I now have the bike and bits.
The clutch seems to have lost its cush drive, as it clonks (metal to metal) when you turn it about 20 to 30 degrees one way or the other. Is there a fix for this, or is it a new clutch?
Thanks
Frank

motosport.com has been pretty good with parts usually ships anything you need with in a week and anything over 79.00 is free shipping. I rebuilt the top end on my 310 and had no problems getting any parts from them, prices are good to.
I think the crank might be unavailable however.

Unfortunately, motorsport.com does not send oem opartas to NZ

I think ZipTy sells an updated cushion (overseas shipping is questionable) and they're a sponsor too. Are yours broken/cracked? if not, soaking them in motor oil for a while might help. maybe.

weird that something would fail like that from storage or non-use.

Hi again.
Does anyone have a diagram of the oil flow through the engine.
This will tell me whether I need to completely dismantle it in order to find all the bits of rubber that have come out of the clutch.
Thanks
Frank

you're good; IIRC there's a screen (or two) before the oil pump pickup, and the filter is right after. Besides, except for oil flow blockage (unlikely), that material shouldn't do any damage.

good luck

Well, one camshaft lobe has visible signs of wear (the other not) that indicates oil starvation to the worn camshaft, so it would appear that some rubber has found its way into an oil feed......

maybe.

But the only conclusion you can draw is that the lobe has wear. everything else is just speculation until you investigate and/or test.

I hate to ask the simple question but.... what does your oil filter look like? has it been bypassed (because of excess contamination)?

that should tell the biggest part of the story.

Many thanks.

Zip TY has a fix. it's a known problem but usually results in clutch moaning not clutch destruction.

I have had the black head apart.

It's not that complicated but parts ARE expensive.

I dunno, The oil feed has a fine screen backed up by a good filter.

Maybe something blocking the screen? it is hard to block that screen.

Ran low on oil? Only .8qts in it!

You have to take it apart.

Check if the cam journals are good.
