  • Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

I know this has been asked but need some input from the people that ride these bikes, I have decided to buy 09 WR, my current ride is a drz400e, good trail bike but shows its weight when pushed.

I am a decent trail rider 6'1 225 lbs, ride WV woods, which bike would be ideal, it has been years since I have ridden a 2-stroke and have no bikes to ride/compare.

I have been told the 300 is better for more wide open spaces and the 250 is a better woods bike especially with a gnarly pipe.

I had a WR 300 long enough for me to figure out it was way too much of a beast for my 48 year old, 180 lb, slow fat guy riding style. I liked the fact that it lugged like a tractor, but the power was too overwhelming for my woefully inadequate woods riding skills.

I'd have to agree with that. Both very good bikes but the milder power of the 250 is EZer to deal with in the woods IMHO

I would go for the 250, loads of smooth low down good mid and a screaming top end, lot off people will tell you that there top heavy, this is a bit of an allusion as the pegs are low the engine is low, but the bike is tall yeah on a full tank may seem like it but more weight over the front end isn't a bad thing
 
The 300 is a total pussycat. It's super planted, super forgiving but is capable of blinding speed once into the power. It's like a split personality motor.... lower half is super docile and top half is kinda wild. It is far less intimidating than my Japanese 250 mx'ers, but doesn't have the stalling issue or wear me out like they do.

The motors dont feel too different, but the 250 does rev out a little easier but doesn't quite have the grunt of the 300 (to be expected). Both are superb, but I already have a 250 and wanted something different so I went 300. I've even tamed mine down a bit with the PC pipe/silencer and its an unbelievable smooth bike. Makes usable power from 300rpms to redline with no hit or super aggressive spots unlike the stock pipe which favored the top.

Cant go wrong either way. You can try mine if you've got some airline miles to burn!

Hey man, I bought an 07 250 WR :thumbsup:. Having never ridden a 300 I can't make a comparison but I can tell you I don't see how you could beat a 250 for trail riding in the hills of WV or anywhere else. I read about them being heavy, nonsense. Mine is easy to ride on steep ground, which is all I've got around hear, steers good in the tight stuff, plenty of usable torque and the traction is really hard to believe I mean on wet slick black slimy woods dirt it will just amaze you. Anyway, my 2-cents worth. I am in Gilmer county where abouts are you?

jsq1 what part of WV are you from. If you are near Berkeley Springs, WV that is where I ride and my Husky dealer is from (Ridersville). I can try to line up a test ride maybe.

I think on the first year the WR 300 was sold here they may have been using the 250 pipe which made them a little more violent when they got into the meat. I think they have there own pipes now. Or if you got a 300 you could always get a after market pipe that was designed for 300cc. It really comes down to what kind of riding you will do and how power hungry you are. I have never met a hill that the WR 250 did not have enough power to go over, now the rider is a different story.

WVdag, you are supposed to say the guy who sold you that WR 250 ripped you off and sold you a pile of junk. You had to re-build it as soon as you got it home. Seriously, I want it back...but I am glad you got it and appreciate the bike I swore I would never sell.

Its not fair comparing your's with the 6 speed and any of the other 250's or 300's with the cr 5 speed. :)

Thanks for the input, I am going for the 300 with my size and weight, since I am use to the 4 stroke torque, If it has too much "hit" I will put on a PC pipe. I live in Webster County, The big mountains for WV.
 
I'm 6'2" - 225lbs and I really like my 09WR300 too....I think you will be happy with it. My 06 KTM 250XC feels a little smaller ergo wise, and I agree the 250 WR like the 250XC is probably a little easier to throw around in the woods. The 300 may be a little more versatile...and I still would like to put on the PC pipe to make things a little smoother in the tight stuff, or when going over slippery rocks and logs.

(Took a high speed digger on the WR300 last fall. The broken collarbone and ribs are all healed up and I'm eager to get back out....spring has sprung here in Wisconsin!) Either way, both the 250 and 300WR are nice scooters and you can't go wrong with either one, versus the DR.

I would go with the 300. If you do not like it, I am sure several people will trade you their 250 top-end parts plus several hundred dollars for you 300 top-end parts. I know I would if I still had my 250.

Get a Gt2 throttle pipe and cams, this will sort it out low down, plus 2 stroke clutches actually work, this might just be me but i had a go on a yam 4 stroke, the clutch was ether on or off, so the slippy muddy climbs were impossible for me any way, viva la 2 stroke
