  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Cam chain?

Hello,
My 2009 TE510 has slowly become a bit too rattly in the top end. I checked valve clearances and they are all within specification. So I am thinking it might be the timing chain. Is there a method of checking if it needs replacing? I understand that the tensioner is automatically adjusting -- maybe that needs replacing too.

Tips appreciated.

How many miles/hours? you sure its a new noise?

You can check cam chain stretch by checking the Auto Cam Tensioner for "ammount of clicks in" too but this is a rough estamate and some would critesize this procedure as not exacting enough. If you go as far as to follow the procedure above... you might as well change it out with a new one...

Then noise could also be: waterpump impeller came loose or cam bearings.

My 08 TXC250 got noisy when the cam bearings started getting loose ... You can grab the gears and check for movement in the bearings ...ANY movement and the bearing need to be replaced ...

Ditto on that. One was about to fly into a million pieces. Easy to check...just take off the lid. On ours, you didn't even have to wiggle it...it was obvious by sight that it was about to go. The bike was a downright rattle-trap once it started letting loose.

59 hours after replacement, one of the bearings let go on the intake cam again. This time, some of the bearing actually escaped into the nether regions of the engine. No extra noise...we found it during a valve clearance check. I'm wondering now if some other force is in play

I have this strange , very quick 'click click' sound when I'm in the 5,550 rpm range in 5th or 6th gear and revving up. Still trying to figure out what's causing it, almost sounds like the timing chain is bumping against something else that's moving...but happening very quickly  No idea, oil is clean - not showing any evidence of severe wear. But the sound 'feels' awkward and unsure if it could cause harm. Only happens in 5th and 6th - and it's not running too lean because I do have a JD Tuner and everything is balanced as far as air/fuel mixture is concerned. Luckily, I'm not in 5th or 6th often reving at those RPMS - but when I do - right at 5800 rpms - it goes 'click click' then runs smooth soon after. I just hope it doesnt' have anything to do with the timing chain

Forces as in voodoo? Maybe witches are out at your place as some think are around here but I'd try a different brand bearing for sure before I got out the pointed spears looks for witches... :)

The simple answer here might be drive chain hitting the frame behind the front sprocket ...
