• Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

cam chain about to die or what?

Well, my bike was working great for a few weeks, and i was wondering what's wrong. :D



I was coming back from work today, and at some point my valves became very very noisy. I didn't stopped cause I was close to home, so I thought I could check it there.
After a few minutes, the bike couldn't rev above 4-5k rpm.
When I was trying to rev, it was "coughing" and going to turn off. It also felt like there was not much compression, the bike had not the proper power even at low rpm.

After all I made it home, where i noticed a few more extremely scary noises.
I found a video on youtube, where a 610 is doing the same scary noise.

This sounds like a cam chain problem, right?
The fact that the bike is still working, means no further damage done?
Is it safe to drive it gently to my mechanic, (~5km distance), or I must find a way to carry it there?
 
I would find sa way to bring it wothout riding it. You could end up with a much larger bill if it craps out on the way there.
 
I spoke with a mechanic on the phone, from my description he says it's probably not the cam chain but the rocker arms, and it's not very risky to ride it there very gently, as long as it won't warm up too much.

I'll try to get it there tomorrow, may the force be with me!




*fun fact: In Greece we call the rocker arms "small roosters". While I was trying to find the English term for them, I couldn't remember the word "rooster", so I google image them as "small cocks".

I wish you the best of luck with your "small", nah, not going there... I mean, I hope they get it all figured out! :cheers:
 
Why don't you pull the ACCT and see how many clicks out it is. Do you know how to do this? It takes 10 min and that's only because you need to pull the mid pipe. Make sure you pull the bolt in the middle 1st and look out for the spring! Then remove from the jug and if it's 10-12 clicks out, cam chain is fin. You can damage it more by still running it. If it's the CC that noise is the chain slacking. CC guides and or reed valves might be getting chewed up.

When I arrived there, I turned it off immediately.
He came out and said, DON'T start it again, I heard it. :o

He's sure about the rocker arms, when he will open it we will now if anything else is damaged.
 
Exhaust rocker arm, roller and camshaft doomed. :/
Cam chain will be changed too just to be sure.

~450€ cost for everything (if I buy them new), I hope I'll find at least a used camshaft.

What is the mileage on your 610? Would be a great reference for other owners.
 
About 30k kilometers ~(19k miles).


I found a cheap enough rocker arm, i think the roller we will use is from a husaberg, and still looking for a reasonably priced camshaft... :(
The other parts will be bought new.

My mechanic said that the exhaust valve may have never been adjusted by the previous owner, maybe his mechanic was "too busy" to remove the cooling system and the rest.
That's what probably caused this problem.
 
Question:

Will a TE 610 (kick starter model not sure which year) camshaft work ok on my bike? I know the camshafts are not exactly the same.
