  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Brand new 449 with a broken Transmission

If he gets screwed ( bike fixed only ) the up side is the damage is in the tranny only . There is no where else for the shrapnel to go but the filters and the husky has a great filtering system.

I think the dealer has some fault here. The oil level should have been checked before delivery. Second of it was just overfilled, then there should have been no additional leaking once the level was corrected.

Sounds awfully fishy to me. I think the dealer boned it, either with prep, or while fixing the ”leak”. They should be able to tell him exactly where the leak was, and what gaskets, etc were replaced. If they can't give you a straight answer in thirty seconds or less, they effed up and are trying to cover their ass.

Demand a new bike or tell him that you will report them to Husky NA, your local consumer protection agency, and blast their name all over the web.

No , there really not much more to the story.
i have been riding for over 41 years, and have been very fortunate to have owned a lot of bikes over the years , i have had some great bikes and some that had some problems right off the showroom floor.
This could have happened to anyone of us experienced or newby, 1 bike or many . my friend is an experienced BMW auto tech , in his mid 20's , who was purchasing his first new bike in number of years. but he is not new to riding by anymeans.
the thing we have to remember is no matter who we are or how much we make , it is not easy to lay out the money for a new bike in this economy . so here we have a guy who bought the brand we all like and support and want to succeed, he has it for a day and it takes a crap . I truly appreciate everyone support , and i hope that someone at husky or ktm wakes up and takes notice that we are still buying the bikes even with an unknow future, i do believe ktm will take care of us and our bikes . but we are still buying them and want to continue to buy them , and its not that easy to get new customers to buy into the product , so please take care of those of us that do.

Do they have buyers remorse laws in your state? I wouldn't take that bike back with a repaired trans.

I am very interested in seeing what exactly failed in the transmission. We raced the hell out of these engines and in extremely harsh conditions, not once did we ever break a clutch or transmission (excluding cranks & torque limiters). And like I said earlier, you cannot over fill this transmission with oil by normal means, it is a dry sump and won't hydra-lock.

I guess some folks are a lot more tolerant than I am. I'd be back at the dealer demanding a replacement bike if a new one I just bought from them a day prior failed like that. Even if they fix it, I would always be wondering "what next" and would never trust it again. Apparently Giuseppe and Giovanni had hangovers they day they built this one.

Put yourself in the dealers shoes. The guy says the transmission was overfilled from the factory and went unnoticed by the dealer. So then he drains some oil out. Now metal chunks are coming out.
I know he claims to be a BMW car tech but it is a new unfamiliar bike to him. Did he drain too much oil out?

If it were low oil, I'd be really surprised if it was the transmission that went first. I would expect the top end to go.

The dealer is the one who told him that parts came out, when the dealer changed it.. period. we will find out what came apart when they decide what they are doing with it ,

Ok , guys . looks like Husky is stepping up and giving my friend a new engine . bad news is its gonna take 2 weeks to get .
they tore the engine apart and it appears it was something with clutch basket bearing , not sure the whole story but seems like when the engine was assembled somebody at foctory decided it needed 2 bearings instead of one , in the space for 1 . not 100 % sure how that is , but thats what they told him , . it just seems to be 1 of those bizzar things , that never seems to happen but somehow did. i'll let you know how this progresses.

Hmm... That doesn't sound right, there is supposed to be two bearings there and one is a double caged bearing. Never the less, he will have a brand new engine and as long as he keeps 1150cc of oil in it, his engine will last a very long time.

I think there is more to the story...
And as I suspected there was more to the story than a 'bad transmission'.

..bad news is its gonna take 2 weeks to get ...
That seems like *great* news to me if it only takes 2 weeks to get a new engine. A lot of stuff has been happening with the buyout this year, and I'm not sure how long it would take to get an engine even prior to the buyout.

It would be quite interesting if there was some way to ascertain if that bike was built after Jan 31st when the buyout was announced (think that was the date).

New engine sounds like good news to me !! I doubt that we will ever know exactly what happened, but good they they are taking the 'replace it all' approach.
