  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Blinkers. How to Protect Them?

Ok. So I'm sure some fellow dual sport owners can relate. I have lost countless numbers of rear blinkers over the years and am getting to the point of " why does this need to keep happening? Anyone play around with a type of metal or plastic shroud that surounds or protects the rear blinkers. I'm just trying to brainstorm and see if anyone has played around custom fabing something for themselves or knows of a company that has a product to save my rear blinkers? I've already fallen for the "Bendable" blinkers you can find out there on the web but I'm on the thought path of more of a guard or re-inforcment piece.

There are companies that make tail light/blinker units that are the same unit. (When turn signal is on half of it flashes). Or maybe try shorter signals or flush mounts. They're generic units.

As far as guards, I've never seen any. I'm sure you can Fab something but I'm not aware of anyone that does.

These are good for the rears. Very durable http://www.extremedualsport.com/

I have sicass flush mount signals on the rear look nice and your not going to hook them:thumbsup:

Is there a reason you don't just go to the arm? I just take mine off new as they will be off in some manner the very first ride. I find that I get way more notice using hand/arm signals than a tiny little light.

Ktm sells a single unit for the xc/exc models. It comes with a tail/brake light and flush mount low profile LED turn signals. That is the best system I have found yet and have yet to break anything. Just have to put up with the quicker flash.

If I replaced my stockers I'de do those front and rear for consistency. Like that they bend. Still using the stockers with foirward brackets as the pipe protects the left side and have not ripped the right side off yet. I am also a hand signal guy from the days when people learned how to drive appropriately but.... The boneheads on the roads today probably don't know what you are doing and some states require some blinkers I think. The extreme or the flush mounts look like a good option.

I bet that less than 50% of cage drivers know what hand/arm signals are...but it is sort of like waving your arm and saying please dont plow into me. That says more than a little blinking light does.

All OEMs violate all kinds of state regs on lighting...but they just sort of slide by. For instance, my TE is 100% "street legal" but most states require the tail light to be illuminated for "X" minutes under battery power alone. Some states (like CA) are as long as 15 mins. I cannot do that as my whole electrical system shuts down after 15 secs.

Each state has its own crazy set of blinker rules with brightness, blink rate, spread, minimum/maximum height etc.. I guess I am lucky enough that as long as I dont ride wheelies down main street I cannot imagine a cop writing me a ticket. If I am going down...it aint going to be for blinkers...

I do have to admit those Extreme Dualsport's look like a nice option. If I had to run blinkers those would be it!

The stock blinkers are very bright. I think they give good warning to others of my intentions. I hand signal too. Anyway, I got 3 number plates for $8 and have 2 1/2 left over. The plastic is flexible enough that the light just tucks under the fender on falls yet springs back out. No busted lights so far.

I have the HDB handnguards and they are top notch. I pondered the flush mount turn signals too but decided to pull my rear ones instead. I use hand signals and my state doesn't require them.

Mike, with the LED's from HDB do you need resistors and a LED flasher relay? I did LED's on my DR650 ans had to go that route.

I just bought an LED flasher from Sicass Racing. Nothing else required to make them work.
