  • Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Bike stranded me in the woods...

I have a new issue with the bike.

It left me stranded in the woods.

Acted like no fuel.

I had tested it around my house looking for issues from all the work I had done, but it seemed great. No leaks. No loose parts. Everything seemed good. Started and ran great around the house.

I took it to the forest in the back of my truck and it ran great once there. Excellent starting with e-start and kick lever.

Had a ball. Super fun.

Until it wouldn’t start on a trail.

Acted like no spark.
Would not start. Eventually, I killed the battery.

So I pushed it out, which is a great weight-loss plan. I lost seven pounds over the weekend. Lol

So I get it home, look it over.

I don’t see anything obvious.
I was thinking I might get lucky and I had failed to properly seat a connector or something.

I don’t see anything, by just looking with a flashlight.

I charged the battery.

Then topped of the gas tank - which was about 3/4 full - and it fired right up - like nothing ever happened.

Thing fires up every time.

I put 11 miles on it in the forest.

And after 11 miles, it acted like it was out of fuel.

Could the pick up loosen or have a crack?

Has anyone seen cracks in the internal fuel line?

Any ideas would be helpful.

Pretty simple to check if there is fuel pressure.

When it stops running and you switch on the IGN can you hear the fuel pump prime?

The pumps can stop when hot then restart when cool.
My 2010 did that on me in 2010.
When it cooled off the pump would restart.
If that is the case, replace the pump.

Also, if your bike is a 310 you can boil the gas in tight woods.
Open the tank and see if the gas is boiling to check.
if you are in Houston in tight woods i suspect you are boiling gas.
 
This bike has no ignition.

You grab the clutch lever and hit the button.

It fires up every time in the garage.
 
Maybe temp sensor.. I think when my '13 was new mine was replaced as was affecting starting. Your symptoms sound like could well be the cause.

My idea failed.

I lowered the fuel level in the tank to a 1/3 of a tank - no effect.
Bike idled and started fine.


When riding in the woods, It was pretty hot - about 90F. The fan did come on several times that I heard.

I’ll start with the insulation of the tank and temp sensor then.

Trench gave me some ideas as well.

It runs fine when it's cool.

When the bike dies, listen for the pump priming.

At 90 deg in 2nd gear tight woods on a TE310R you will boil the gas unless you are a fast A rider who keeps it moving fast.
Pop the gas cap and lookout for boiling gas.
 
Just to mention the first thing to check...I know it sounds silly but...is your fuel tank vent hose and gas cap venting properly? Sounds like it get's vapor lock after riding for a bit. When you cracked the gas cap to put more fuel in did it hiss a little like air was escaping?

Sometimes the easy things get overlooked. Happened to me once on a bike.
