• Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Bike mounted camera. Where's best?

Right Acu, fim, iopd and just about every other form of licence provider have banned head mount action cams now some have banned chest mount ones too.

This leaves us with little room for mounting camera to the bike now I've done bar mount and mudguard mount both to rubbish effect off road.
Is there a gimble type of rig i could use or any other ingenious way of getting better than unuseable results?

Let me know how you got around the problem, different camera settings post recorded editing? Elastic bands I'm open to all suggestions
 
who are you saying has banned various positions?
ill tell you one thing.. i cant stand chest mounted video...sucks to watch..just a poor perspective. i like watching the ones mounted on the helmet-side...

Couldn't agree with you more. I can't stand watching a view of the gas tank and handlebars jumping and bouncing around, and practically no view of the terrain and surrounding scenery.:thumbsdown:
 
If you can rig a mount to a shoulder pad everyone will call you the predator. A joby tripod may be a way to start then secure it to the gear.
 
Ordered an RC quad copter gimbal, will remove head light Cowel and hook this up to mount on the bars.
It uses brushes motors and a gyro fingers crossed it will smooth the image out enough to be useable.
 
hmm, i wonder what the deal was with the ban on body mounting? what their reasoning was?
will be interesting to see if the gimbal works..
 
It's due to extra rotational forces on the neck during an accident the increased risk of spinal damage wich can easily be avoided.
Take the camera of your head.
The auto cycle union is the race licence issuer and provides insurance so I imagine it's their insurers that won't pay out.

I've nothing against chest mount but i can't use them so that's null and void.

A lot of the helmet mount set up issues happened after Schumachers skiing accident. There were euro offroad organizations that were going to ban it as far as I remember
 
Yeah that's what I'm saying, all our race licence providers have said no, unless it's bike mounted your not having it.
Don't know where we stand with the liquid image goggles tho.
 
If you go the liquid image route keep in mind the goggle are big and you need a helmet with a large opening. They didn't fit my medium scorpion for anything...
 
Ive yet to see or hear of anyone being asked to remove a camera, In fact we are asked to send our footage to the race organiser if we catch any coarse cutting riders on film.
Jarvis Walker ect are all governed by the same rules and they are always camera mounted.
Jarvis gets his mounted under his peak I made up some alloy brackets years ago that cable tie to the front chin guard area and work well with the added bonus of full on commentary laughing at all yours mates crashes and in my case sadly talking to my bikes calling them good girls or boys when they drag my fat ass up things I dont expect to clear lol.

I know liquid image do goggles with a camera in so well protected the issue is I ware glasses and no goggles as I steam up, suppose I could remove the lens.

God you Poms take it that one step further don't youse!!! You can't have a cam mounted under the visor?
 
Not in the last two events I've done one by iopd and other by acu, not sure why if johnny hasn't been asked to, I find on practice days they're relaxed but on event day is a no.
Could just be down to organisers.
 
Load of crap really!!! Track day providers use to be same here in Oz until pro teams started to use them and now it's pretty much at your risk.
 
I would go with something in the handlebar zone or like you said a headlight type mount, see those tips from rocky mountain even a nice "ram" mount type thing off the bars, no?

It will be bouncy for sure, the beauty of the body mount is that it has the inherent stability of our body.

One thing for sure I 100% agree the helmet cam thing is a danger, especially when top mounted, I quit that mount when I almost ripped my head off from a low hanging branch that snagged the cam, I even had a fishing line tether so when the cam popped off it remain attached to me. I had some neck muscle strain for a week or 2 after that.

Best of show on this project but I think just go for it and try some clamp/ram mount locations up near the front and center of the machine to find the best solution. Moto.it Photo journalist Pietro used a right side of handlebar ram mount clamp set up for his 360fly cam mount for the SWM test we did, it worked well and the view from there was good and not crazy bouncy.
