• Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Bad or Suspect ECU !.. Try This First...!

I had no Spark at plug !
Went through every usual hoop of course starting at the absolute wrong end of the problem with only 2 souring options left: Bad wiring harness or Bad ECU.


I could not stand looking at that black silent mysterious 1000 bucks sealed box any longer !
To just get any kind of reaction or hint from her something whispered FREEZE the *****
2 Solid Days in a Zip Lock Bag and:

BIKE HAS NEVER RAN SO GOOD !!!

Hope this can save anyone else going through this very long nightmare.
"Carmo Electric" in California offer a possible ECU repair with 3 year warranty for about one the cost of new from dealer.

cryogenics.............even works for electronic systems too.......... next time I will roll my bike into the meat locker at my friends meat company to cryo the metal and the electronics all in one shot.
 
Probably has bad solder joints and heat/humidity cause them to expand and lose connection.


90's Honda cars were notorious for bad solder joints in the main relays and wouldn't start when hot/humid out.

Basically the Freezing action squeezed the unit together, so as the great example above any separated connection would have a possible chance of reconnecting.
Its only a temporary fix or a possibility to pin point the ECU as your problem if you don't have one to swap it with, I will still need it repaired or replaced.

You know this has really got me thinking here.
I thought the ECU's on our bikes where sealed with a solid varnish like stuff but looking closer its more like a soft poly which I'm pretty sure I can pick and pull out, then I can re solder this thing myself ! ehmm
I wonder if anyone has tried to open one ?
 
Am I going to get an ear full if I open a new thread asking if anyone has any experience on opening the ECU's ?

I think I'm going try and repair this thing myself...

That makes sense. Good find.
 
i used get burned during micro min soldering when I was a newbie, I thought I was a badass....joint looked great, color nice, flowed nice, BUT inspector revealed voids and possible cold joint or over temp joinst.
definitely took some time to get the feel for hand working under the microscope.
Im sure those joints are machine done.
ours were hand done because they were us performing modifications/updates to existing cards--if I told you what they were for I would have to kill you......the platform has since been retired anyway.

Thanks a lot Man yeah its like a rubber I found a guy on youtube who soaked a CDI unit in Acetone to remove it which it did but also that messed up the wire shielding too so Ill keep looking but its going to be around 400 bucks for Carmo to do it so its worth the gamble.

Did you guys ever have remove this rubber stuff ?
 
Just be careful, lots of surface mount stuff in there. Maybe you can keep that one to tinker with while you ride with a new one.
