    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Backfiring after washing

after washing my bike, i started it up and it ran like crap. it didn't want to idle and was backfiring like crazy....so much that it made my daughter run for cover!!!
i had just swapped out to a new ims tank and i also did the fuel pump mod so i was thinking that the problem was something i did with the pump.
after riding the bike about 2 miles down the road, the bike cleared itself out and ran normal.
this is the second time this has happened but the first time i got only a couple backfires. this time around, it was like a live firing range.
now i don't use a power washer, just a normal hose. i also don't pound at the engine or controls with the hose. just a soft mist to get the soap and dirt off. i also use simple green on the bike.
are there any negative side effects of the backfiring and running like crap?
does this happend to everyone who washes their bikes??? if so, i guess this is the last time it gets a bath!!!
 
Freind of mines te310 was doing this everytime we went through a creek or bog hole. I believe that it is water getting in the electrics somewhere.
 
Yep, water grounding out your spark plug wire. After washing unplug and clow out the cap/wipe down the wire once dry you should be fine.
 
Sounds like the air filter is getting wet. The airbox openings under the grabrails let in a lot of water

One really wet ride I lost one of the rear fender bolts that mounts to the airbox. The airbox was now leveraging against the midpipe and burned a hole after the filter. My bike was backfiring then run for a short time then die. Once home and out of the forest I found the proplem.

i wasn't spraying the underside of the airbox so i don't think i was getting anything in the airfilter. i could see the plug getting wet being a problem though. any solutions for that?

Generous helpings of dielectric grease at the plug wire connections, and at all the other electrical connections, for that matter...
 
do the grease thing as suggested everywhere and ALWAYS bag yer filter with a plastic shopping bag when ya wash yer bike. water gets in from a lot of places when even lightly hosed off.

well i just bought some grease and will try the bagging the air filter
 
oh yeh totally cover the filter with something, water runs down the tank under the seat etc...water on the filter is baaad...
 
only if ya go through 'em upside down...so dont do that!

serious though...i always cover my filter when i wash the scoots...splashes through puddles aint the same as the sheeting actions created by a hose etc...

good point on the pipe plug glan....packing last longer that way etc...forgot about that one. good point!
 
mine did the same thing. The coil was shorting to ground when wet.

I siliconed the lug and I think it is okay now.
 
i put dielectric grease on the lug of the spark plug. i hope that helps. will probably pick up a plug for the pipe when i get a chance. i always wondered what they were for
