  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Auto / Manual kickstart swop ?

grouty

Auto Lover ...
I am not keen on the original kick start on my 78 390 AMX. My boot will foul the foot peg. Will the kick start from a 78 390 6 speed fit and work ? This will move my boot outwards and clear the peg.

Anyone tried this swop ? If it doesn't then I will have to put up with the auto style.

I've already got those from the 6 speed Steve ! Just that I reckon they will last longer with a different kicker on the Auto.
I have a nice spare lever to try. But I would rather have some info from someone who has tried it.

I have tried another Husky kick start though I do not know which model it was from and seem to remember I could not make it work with the stop. I also think I have asked this question on this forum and got the same answer you are getting, nothing. The closeness of the lever to the frame and kicking with the right foot means boot buckles ripped off and when you add the very short throw before hitting the foot rest, all in all a design b###s -up. I have thought of getting some one to make me a splined pin to which I could fit another kicker to.

I have stripped the spline on my 78 AMX. It's a fine spline, useless design and I don't think the manual gearbox kickers will fit. My solution was to fit a decompression device to the head. Kicking is easy peasy and the delicate mechanism does not get stressed. 390s have high compression! No need to rip buckles off your boot with this mod. You don't need a lot of force and can position your toes properly to get a good kick without difficulty. Vulcan Engineering decomps with 14mm spark plug thread. Get a decent machine shop to machine a second spark plug hole in the head. Looks very tidy when done right.

Maybe I will save the experiment for a later date !

On the plus side .... the rebuilt wheels for the Auto will be back on Monday :)
