  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Arrow muffler too #%^&n loud

MorrisBetter

Husqvarna
AA Class
OK, I can't ignore it any more. The 2008 PU kits Arrow muffler is just to freekin' loud. Every time I ride a canyon road I hear my own echo. Everybody else is hearing it too, and I really don't need the extra attention at 2.5 X the speed limit.

Before I start drilling out rivets, is there anybody that has tackled this problem that can shed some light on how the muffler is constructed, or what can be done to tame the DBs?

The current plan; I'd like to open the can and wrap the core tube with SS pan scrubies*. I've had good results in the past using this trick, but that was a long time ago (Carter administration) with mufflers that were designed to be packed with fiberglass. I have no idea what's inside of this muffler, so this may be a complete goose-chase.

Anybody have word of wisdom here?

Husky dB Killer

Apparently the DB killer is a no-go on the 2008 can.

True. I have tried it. You do have the spark arrestor in place, right? (The screen shown in the picture above.) Read up on old threads about the '08 Power Up exhaust. I read that one person had put in a DB Dawg. I had made my own prototype and it worked until it broke and I've been too lazy to make a new proper one. The spark arrestor makes it right at my threshold of being too loud and reports of '08s failing sound tests at enduros seem to have gone away even though there is no easy solution to quiet them down.

I have the SA in place. It's still too loud. I've looked at the DB Dawg, but it looks like it doesn't qualify as a SA. No screen is evident in the pictures. It also looks like a kludge.

Does anybody know what the Arrow can is packed with.....if anything?
Yes, it has a screen wrapped around the perforated tube, and fiberglass packing around that.

I was in the same boat as you, took my can apart and repacked it, but it didn't make much difference. Went to dB killer and it killed the performance too.

I found the best mod was just to go with Duals. No performance hit at all, and really is quieter.

1>The DB Dawg- has a spark arrestor screen- it can be purchased as an option. (I have no experience with the product but have heard they work)
2>I believe the DB Killer can be made to work with an 08 but you'd need to cut the length of it down alot. apparently there is a bend in the inner baffle on the 08's that is 5-6" from the outlet (so I have read but you could verify since you have one)... It might loose some dbkilling abilities - but would still significantly decrease sound- and that does not incorporate a SA screen.
3>Best bet is making your own if you have access/abilities or know a guy.

Just know that performance/ and fueling will be affected when you significantly change exhaust flow (any of the 3 above will add restriction)- leading to tuning issues. Running rich and in the low end when hot= flameouts hesitation and stumbling responce - with an 08- it can become frustrating unless you have a PCV and know how to use it. After I quieted my 09 down with a modded insert (95db) I needed to go lower on my Ibeat settings- but mainly CO1.

OK, so it sounds like the order of business is to get a tuning solution in place, and then tackle the DB level. I was planning on going the PC V & AT route anyway. The most appealing idea here is to fab an '08 compatible clone of the DB killer. Maybe not so restrictive.

Thanks for all of the help guys. This forum is really a wealth of info.
