  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Anyone running a trials rear tire?

Don't be so sure you don't want the 12T with the trials tire.

Running a trials tire on the rear is like removing 2 teeth from the rear sprocket. It grows on the highway increasing the gearing. You should try the 12T again.

but there are no highways in the woods!

does the trials tire really grow that much while riding in the woods? once again, lots of 2 track and single track by me. no wide open trails. i realize that it will grow at highway speeds (50 mph and greater) but i'm not going to do that. i can ride right out my back yard and only hit roads when absolutely necessary to get home.

my reason for not wanting to go back to a 12 tooth is that it is just so abrupt down low

just rode down the road a mile or 2 and got up to 70 and the middle lug rubbed a quarter way through the mud guard. on the way back, i didn't go above 50 and no rubbing at all.
i think i am going to leave it the way it is for now and if i burn a hole through the mud guard, i'll just order a new one. i'm going to get out in the woods this afternoon sometime so that will be the real test.

What pressure you running?

What pressure you running?
10 psi in the rear.

just got back from a ride in the woods. i hit a bunch of 2 track and rocky hills. i checked the mud flap and there was no rubbing at all.
the 13/50 gearing is a lot tamer than the 12/50 and overall i liked the ride of it better. the thing i do miss is the super quick response of the 12/50 to get over logs and such. but that was what i didn't like because it was just so abrupt.
i may try a 52 tooth sprocket in the near future.

as far as the tire goes, that thing hooked up very well. i hope the tire holds together through all the rocks. if it does, this is what i'll be running from now on.

I've done about 40 miles on mine now at 10 PSI. Zero issues on road or off. Sticks like velcro in the woods and tracks more predictably in slimy clay mud (or at least I think it does...I didn't end up in the weeds like I usually do) Seems like what everyone says about them is pretty accurate. No grass tracks to play on around here so I'll be cautious if I'm ever on one with this tire.

i tried adding a link to my chain and when i do i don't have enough adjustment to adjust my chain properly. I am running the stock 13/52. Any ideas?

since this tire seems to be a little bit taller than most, lets see if we can let others know what gearing they are running, how many links in the chain and where on the adjusters the chain is set.

i'll start

bike-08te510 with mt43 rear tire

13/50 gearing
114 links
just under the 4th adjuster line
i can just fit my finget between the middle tread and the mud guard at 10psi. i also learned that i can run in the woods without rubbing and up to 50 mph on the road without rubbing. once i hit 70 mph, the tire rubs the mud guard.

i tried swapping gears last night to a 12/47 but the 114 link chain was too long. i didn't want to cut it down because if i didn't like how it rode, i would have to get a new chain.

ideally i would like to go with a 13/51 or 13/52 but before i go and spend more $$$$, i would like to know what others are and what kind of clearance they have. i would say that the way i have it setup right now, thats the minimun clearance to run without rubbing like crazy.
