    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Getting ready to do my first oil change myself. Found a thread or two here with some tips. It seems like some dont use the main drain plug which I would like to do because I cant even find mine. The photo in the manual shows an "oil drain cap" that protrudes from what looks to be the lower front of the engine. My 2011 TE does not have that. I can see a bolt underneath the engine that looks like it would be an oil drain but not going to be easy getting to that.I do see where/how to pull the filters but are there any other filters? Where can you get new filters or can it just be cleaned? Sorry for the dumb questions but the manual does not go into much detail and my bike does not have the spigot that is pictured on page 79 of the manual. Is it OK to use Castrol 4T 10W40? The did not have 10W 50
 
Your X-Lite engine has the oil drain plug on the rear of the engine. It is hard to see because it is parallel to and somewhat hidden by the lower frame member. It is a little hard to get out, and even harder to get back in. Box end wrench and small fingers are what's called for. Once you get the plug out there is a screen behind it that needs to be cleaned.

Oil filter is behind the round plate with 3 screws where the oil return hose drops from the head to the crankcase on the right hand side of the engine. Can't clean that one. I use the HiFlo HF116 filter as they are cheap, good quality and easy to find (same filter as a CRF250). Almost any good shop should stock a *116 filter, I usually grab a couple when I go to Cycle Gear.

As to oil choice ... don't get me started :rolleyes: The Xlite engine revs high and is hard on oil since it only holds about a quart, so it shears quickly. Hence the requirement for a heavier oil. The Castrol 4T 10w40 is a fine oil but it will break down quickly. Probably OK as long as temperatures aren't too high and you are changing it frequently, like every few hours. Clean, light oil is better than dirty though... Order some heavier oil for next time..

Thanks .. So there are no other filters to clean? Can you drain the oil by removing another bolt on the side of the engine and tilting it or is it best to do it from the main drain?
 
You have to use the drain plug in the back. As mentioned before, there is a screen in there too which you should extract and clean. I usually blow it out with compressed air or wash it in the sink and let it thoroughly dry. Other than that, its just replacing the filter on the right side.
