Corona, CA - July 9, 2012 - For the third time this year, Andrew DeLong and Fred Andrews Racing Husqvarna celebrated a win in the XC2 class of the Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) series. Teammate Nick Davis had a stellar ride, moving from 13th up to fifth, where he finished at the Millfield, Ohio event. High temperatures and dusty conditions meant the race was a tough one, but Andrew fought on until the final lap, ending his day atop the podium with a solid gap on second place at the John Penton GNCC.
Both FAR Husqvarna TC250s ran flawlessly and endured the Midwest heat throughout the three-hour race. Mid-pack starts meant that both FAR riders would have to fight their way through the dust, and unfortunately for Davis, the dust became a factor early.
"I got a vine around my neck just after the start," Davis explained. "I just couldn't see it. I was following Andrew, and then I was on the ground. It got me pretty good, so I had to just charge the rest of the way to make up time."
The vine yanked him off his bike, and cost him several minutes before he was going again. A solid effort from the young FAR rider saw him running as high as fourth place before settling in to fifth, where he would finish.
Up front, DeLong had a battle on his hands for the lead with Jason Thomas. The two traded the lead several times before Andrew gained control of the race after the gas stop. A mistake on lap four dropped him back to second place, but DeLong stayed right on top of the leader and applied steady pressure until he was able to regain the point. True to form, DeLong was strongest in the final laps of the race, and was able to open up a 28-second lead by the time the checkered flag came out.
"That's how I like to race!" Andrew exclaimed. "I was just following, waiting for a mistake. It was hot out, and I was just waiting 'til the last lap to see if he had anything left. My TC250 worked great, and my pit was so fast today! Missing the first two rounds, I just need to win as many of these things as I can and see where I end up in points!"
"I am so proud of the team today, and happy to see Andrew get another win!" Fred Andrews commented. "This is where this team should be finishing, and we are looking forward to finishing out the second half of the season strong!"
FAR Husqvarna returns to racing July 28th in Cross Fork, PA for the seventh round of the AMA/Rekluse National Enduro Championship.
