• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

An odd thing happened to me on my way to work today...

I'm driving down the road and suddenly..."wham"! I thought something catastrophic broke in my drive train. I got out of my Jeep and found this! Odd things happen. Glad it wasn't something more serious, but man it's a pretty new tire!

Damn, that sucks JP

That wrench must be broken on the other side, right?
Can you even plug a hole that size or is this new tire pretty much gone?

I didn't have a camera with me when it happened, but I had a catastrophic blowout on my truck one afternoon and found a heavy duty pliers style oil filter wrench sticking out of my tire! And another time a big bolt went into my tire headfirst. Crazy looking shots there in your post, but not hard to believe after my adventures with weird punctures.

The wrench was a bear to get out. I thought for sure that the end/handle of the wrench was going to be broken and sharp but to my surprise...

My neighbor thinks the front tire ran over it, kicked it up, and it landed just right when my rear tire came along and speared it. Wow, that must be one in a million. Hey I got a nice forged made in the USA wrench that will have a good story behind it. Unfortunately no road hazard warranty! Not sure if it can be repaired, it is a pretty gnarly hole/gash that surely tore up the steel belts. May not be safe to use any more.

amazing what finds its way into your tires. when I was working as a motor mechanic I came across large bolts, screwdrivers, plaster saws. the list goes on. never a shifter though, lol

That big of a hole won't take a plug & patching will not hold forever or be trustworthy at speed especially on the Jeep (a little top heavy on the street). Good Luck & feeling for ya

Ok...so is the wrench...once cleaned up usable? Or is it just gonna be hung on the wall for after work beer stories?

That's a perfect tire for a tire swing--it already has a drain hole in the bottom!

Seriously, though, tough luck on that one. I never buy the road hazard warranty, but now I'm thinking it might not be such a bad investment.

Take the tyre to the dealer and say that this should not happen to a new tyre and you would appreciate some compensation/discount at least. Amazing picture you would never figure on that outcome

Yes, I agree with you. At best I might delegate it to the spare only, but it's also possible no one will be willing to fix it for liability sake.

Yes, believe it or not, the wrench works perfectly other than being scuffed up! Forged and made in the USA.

+1 on the alien thingy, great responses and holy smokes that goes in the top 10 strangest things file.

That will be a hard story to top for many years to come.

But I am glad you were able to pull over safely.
