  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Adventures with my TE310 - the beginning

REI is charging $189 for the same bag. Albeit, with their better return policy (lifetime, without reciepts, in any store in the country).

REI supports groups that are anti-ohv (like the Sierra Club). I don't think it's REI's intention to be anti-ohv, but they are by supporting these "our way or the highway" groups and their myopic views of how public lands should be used. In many cases those groups solution is to close them off to EVERYONE. It's stupid how silly they are.

So, if you have the time an inclination, drop a note to REI saying that you support OHV activities and knowing the REI supports groups that are not, you have mixed feelings about continuing to shop there.

RE: the sleeping bag.

How small is it packed up? I used use a decent sleeping bag, but it rolled up pretty big. I dropped some heavy coin on a good MontBlanc that rolls up WAY smaller. And on a bike, smaller = better.

Just figured I'd mention it.

Can't beat a good dirt bike ride for that psychological clean out WbCherry, used it for that many a time, though have to say my clean outs seem minor considering your comments!
Good Luck from Australia and enjoy the Husky!

Thinking about a progressive throttle cam for better slow control
http://www.g2ergo.com/g2-throttle-cam-system-80.html

Taking the bike to a custom fabrication shop later. Want some pannier bag supports, cause I don't like the huge backpack. And an oil filter cover with an attached resevior for extra oil. Pipe dreaming....

Tax return is huge this year, so I get to blow my remaining GI Bill funds on bike stuff.

Received Ion's sprocket and beautiful gold D.i.D. chain! Thanks, hero!

Found these for $98 (for the pair) on AdvRider. Flood and center spot, high power LED.
Larger than I expected, but...they'll work. Just gotta figure out where to mount them.

7602 Racing oil filter cover, so I don't fiddle with the little spring and lose it
It seems stronger than the stock cover, too.

A book I suggest everyone to read.
Written by an Auschwitz survivor who then got his PhD. VERY extraordinary.

When do you leave? If you decide to change your route up and make it to NH drop me a line. We have lots of great riding up here.

I might actually take you up on that. My grandmother is a Holocaust survivor.

You're incredibly lucky to know her. They're some of the only people I actually respect.

A month or so. Who knows.
I'm thinking of hitting the northeast later in the year, if this little shake-down goes well.

Photos tomorrow of some other modifications.
People stopped me 5 times today, to talk about and admire the Husky. Enjoyable, but it slowed my progress.

Man you've done a lot to that thing! Something I noticed in the filter cover picture, you may want to secure your oil line safety wire to a different location rather than the relatively soft alloy fitting itself. The stainless safety wire may saw through the alloy fitting depending on how tight you made it, dirt, and vibration and make you an ugly nasty arterial leak. Can't wait to read the ride report(s)

Not having been to America and coming from such a small island like the UK it's difficult to appreciate the scale of what you're doing so I googled the Trans American Trail which you mentioned previously, 5000 miles and 99% dirt track, mountains, deserts etc etc, looks amazing, would be like me traveling 5 times up and down the UK except I would have to do it 99% tarmac road!!
I genuinely envy you for attempting this trip, it's an adventure I would love to do one day but know I never will, good luck.

They're LED, probably 10w or less each at a guess so the draw should be small compared to if they were halagen.

I could have sworn I read 95w, but a quick review indicates I was having a pre mocha hallucination.

Never mind. Carry on! :)

No updates today,sorry.

Doing legwork for corporate support for the charity. And a very large honey-do list....

My "PR people" tell me I'm not the best voice for charity.
My physical appearance has only limited appeal to desperate single-mothers and strange gay men.
I may adopt a cute mascot...like the ASPCA and Geico.

If you're reading this, and would like to help....call/email these people to support our charity.
Tell them you're following my adventure and how their products perform.

7602 Racing oil filter cover, so I don't fiddle with the little spring and lose it
It seems stronger than the stock cover, too.
IMG_20120130_134250.jpg

Probably not a bad Idea, I cracked my oem oil filter cover- so it happens.... I believe the stock is cast aluminum and the 7602 is billet. You loose not just oil but oil pressure if it cracks- you have a very short time to notice it or your out a motor. There's no trail fix- "quickweld" epoxys won't cut it.

filtercov3.jpg

my short story of it here- did I catch it in time??

Nothing to do but ride it until it blows! Heh!

Blew up my first bike that way. Rode a GS500 for miles on the highway, forgetting to refill the oil. Twisted a rod like a politician's ethics.

Experience is expensive.

The 7602 cover is a MUUUUCH better part than the stock POS.
$30 is cheap insurance against engine overhaul.
Cast aluminum shatters like nobody's business! And good luck welding it up...
Also keeps you from losing the little spring inside. I hate fiddling with the thing. Now, it just clips right in to the 7602 cover...you don't ever have to mess with it again.

red...black....they both look nice.

Their ignition cover is being shipped, and I'm waiting for the clutch cover.
Will be great to have, with Moab rocks...protect against lever gouges when I fall every half-mile...etc
They'll definitely be tested.
Check back to see how they hold up!

Good bunch of guys, too. Talked with the owner today. Pretty upstanding dood.
Spent lots of time on the phone with me, answering my questions and concerns.

WBCherry thank you for your service. I wish you all the best with school. Take it slow with the bike riding and don't ride over your head. Wear all the protective gear. No excuses that it doesn't feel right or it is to expensive. That is BS. I wear everything. Good knee braces are $300-$600 but you get what you pay for. A torn ACL will cost you much more. Neck brace, get one, even a cheap one. I hit a Joshua tree flying through the California desert sand. Got up laughing. Enjoy.
