  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Does the attached photo look correct? Should the hardware butt up against the side of the bar like that, or should it slide into the bars? OD is pretty much the same as that of the bars (which are stock '14 TXC310R bars).. Thanks in advance!

Looks fine, besides it's better to have some room in that spot. In a hard fall into rocks the aluminum bar will push in and cause the throttle to stick/rub. I rode about 30 miles in a hare and hound this year with sticky throttle because I had the guard too close to the throttle tube.

I fixed it and was out doing some course scouting when I did it again. Had to fix it on the trail so I could ride without cruise control. Finally decided that more clearance was in order after that.

I've tried every conceivable bar insert they sell it seems to mount my different hand guards al of the turned or slipped in or out. Or would allow the hand guard to still rotate if the bike went down. None of them worked worth a damn.

On My FE501, I just tapped the ends of the bars with a 5/8-11 N.C. tap and only tapped it deep enough to allow a set of aluminum bar inserts to screw in all but the last few threads. Tighten them in with the tapered bolts and double nut it first and using Blue Loctite for the insert into the bars.

I punch my grips with a .060 thick piece of 7/8" dia. 4130 Chromoly tube, Its sharpened from the inside out to a razor edge. The outside of the 7/8" OD tube is untouched with a stone or grinder. So the cutting is done cleanly and the 7/8 diameter plug cut out of the grip is captured in the tube it can be easily plucked out.

I'll maybe put a nylon washer on each end between the bar end threaded insert and the hand guard and you know what ?? These things don't move. No drag at all on the throttle action and no interference. I am using an Aluminum G2 Ergonomics quick turn throttle tube with the bearing end removed. and Billet G2 ergonomics mounting U clamps for the hand guard mounts. they are rock solid.
