  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

About to buy an 08 sm510r! Some concerns...

Hey all! Great forum over here, came from thumper talk.

Found an 08 sm510r with about 15 miles on it...problem is it has been sitting for 2 years, though the guy says he started it last summer.

Has had fuel in it the whole time and has been tarped outside...

Should I be concerned about gunked up fuel in the injector, throttle body, etc? What about rust on the cam chain/ cams...? Not sure if that last one is a valid concern but you get where I'm headed...

Getting a pretty good deal, but can you all think of anything I should look for before buying?

Thanks!:notworthy:

Depends on what a "pretty good deal" is. Because it's been sitting for so long (and outside!) there will be some parts that need attention and maybe replacement. I wouldn't be overly concerned with any of the items you listed, but all should be checked. Along with chain, brake rotors, etc... there's more than likely some surface rust on parts - some of which could be cleaned off, some maybe not??

But if "pretty good deal" means cheap enough to still have some cash left over for a few replacement parts if needed.... get it. I just bought the exact same bike with 1400 miles on it and I love it. It's not practical, it's not comfortable, and it's not fast when compared to the sportbikes I used to ride.... but it's still a RIOT!!! I love the bike and plan on keeping it for a long time. Good luck.

Same here. I bought 2008 TE510 from friend that only ridden twice and it has 19 miles. I put in about 350 miles in 2 days riding and it was great. The bike running fine just done the 1st oil change.

If the bike has been sat with fuel in for that long there is a chance of the fuel pump being gummed up. You'd need to check the bike runs ok for a few miles before you could be sure the pump isn't damaged.

Great, thanks for the replies. Bought the bike without starting it, battery was dead and I was concerned about possible lack of oil.

What would you all do before starting?

My List:
Change fluids
Check valves
Clean and oil air filter

Add anything?
