  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

81 WR430 issues

Hi to all,
new to forum and own an 81 WR430 that I've just restored. Did 150km trailride and bike went awsome. 2 issues, a slipping clutch and front 35mm forks topping out (on rebound). Can anyone suggest a good trans oil that suits the clutch as the manual asks for a 20W motor oil which isn't available anymore. With the forks I'm running 10w at 400ml /leg, I'm thinking I have worn damper rod bushes? Anyone had same problem? Thanks in advance.

You need to adjust the clutch push rod "top hat". It is under the pressure plate on the end of the push rod and when the fiber plates wear, it needs to be adjusted to compensate. As for the transmission, you will get a different answer from every person, but I use ATF type F, or in the last few years I started using tractor transmission/hydraulic fluid, similar to ATF but a bit more viscosity.

If the forks are topping out you need to replace the damper rod top out rings.

when you pick up the damping rings, get an extra pair. they can be a maintenance item! they should be replaced when seals are done..or at least some on hand. another option for your transmission is a 10w30ish weight motorcycle motor oil. atf type f works well and shifts nice. i personally use amsoil 10w30 mc oil but have used alot of atf in the past

Yes, the crucial part is that the top out washers need to be completely flat - or they do not stop the 'clunk' you get on full extension. You can make the problem worse by adding preload to the fork springs!!!

On the clutch, also check that there is enough 'meat' left on the plates so they don't allow the pressure plate to bottom out on the clutch hub - as if this happens, it won't matter how strong the clutch springs are - you will not stop it slipping...

Both things easily overcome though.

Andy.
