• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

81 to 88 kick start parts

fran...k.

Husqvarna
AA Class
I was wandering around ebay lately and found some kick start parts, well a bunch of parts really but this one came in two pieces unlike I am used to. I tried to pull one of my 88 ones apart and didn't have success but didn't heat it or weld a way to really pull on it. It appears that back to 1981 the parts sheets show it as a whole. Has anyone had them come apart like in the picture or is familiar with this issue. I seem to be finding the surfaces those needle bearings ride on isn't always in the best of shape.

Fran, I just had mine apart on my 84 WR250 with the watercooled clutch cover. It came apart just like the one you have pictured, I used a dab of grease to hold them together upon reassembly

all 81 and up kick start assemblys were 2 parts..they are made of like metal, and guall together, then the bearing is the next to go...
what i have done,.on a new shaft, open the large part of the shaft, and install an oil lite bushing that fits tight...when i say tight,..youll have to freeze the oil lite, and heat the shaft to install, then install the post it should fit snug, and wont seize up anymore...
the oil lite bronze will keep it lubed for life...
word of caution...91 and up kickstart shafts and the one that Husky sells now are JUNK...are made from investment cast heat treated steel, and will fracture, if you heat them, or try and drill them they will fracture as well,
look for pre 91 kick starter parts.,...any of the ones sold by Husky today,.,.are crap.

Thanks for the advice. I am not really sure it matters if they are stuck wouldn't the idea be so the place the bearing rides on can be finish ground easily? I thought an improvement was made to the set of kick starting gears somewhere around 1985 give or take but I have a bunch of the newer gears and the one on the back of the clutch doesn't seem generally as bad but the insides of the one the pawl pushes on where the needle bearings go seems almost always poor. If they all do come apart perhaps I can mix and match good pawl holder and good bearing surface. Do you think the part which holds the pawl is weldable? it is amazingly easy to file.

That is good to know about the new kick start pawl holder part as it seemed not a bad part to buy new as it is like $80.

You can see I found a new replacement gear and sleeved the insides on one with a drawn cup hk16 type bearing cut up. The gear can't be any more junk than the origional but no thru holes.

Fran,

I just double checked the 82-88 parts manuals & the p/n for the shaft #20 is the same, for your info.

if you just need the gear, i have a few,..if you need a new shaft assembly....good luck...just watch fleabay..and avoid the new part that Husky sells...youll be sorry.

I guess I will bump my thread here as I had some more kick starter issues with my bike and it's fresh piston and timing set to what the literature says. This is the intermediate gear the one that is broke is from my 88 and the one with the edeges clipped is an earlier one. One might try and study the wear if you can see it on mine that failed next time you have your clutch basket off. Fortunately it just went vzzz and stalled at idle twice and didn't have any catastrophic failure. Unfortunately I took the engine out assuming it was going to need to be split.

if you need any idle gears..i have a couple...depending on what year and size...big bore 4 strokes have a larger clutch gear, and take a different gear.

Hello, I am looking for an 85 xc 500 kickstart gear. Hard to find here in el paso. If you have an extra gear I would like to buy one from you. Thank you for your time.

I got the one in the picture to the left post 4 from up state cycles. Either they havn't updated the on line inventory or they still have more.

I also sold some used parts like that a few years ago to a guy who said they were orderable (according to him via Halls phone conversation) at that time.

Edit, sorry

That part # though is different than the one you want #161127101 from your parts sheet but I don't have access to the superceeded part # info. You probably should count the teeth as the tooth number and hence pitch went through a change somewhere around 1985.
