  • Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Once you get on their mailing list, they mail them to you quite frequently. Go to your local newsstand and pick up a copy of Hot Rod magazine or something similar. You will find a 20% coupon towards the middle to back of the magazine attached to a HF advertisement.
Puckerbush: Yes you can adjust the output of the blaster via a knob on the top. It really does work very well, just make sure you have a moisture removal mechanism on your compressor other than what comes with the blasting unit.

You can't get the engine out without getting the swinging arm bolt out. The bolt goes right through the back of the engine cases. I had trouble betting the bolt out of mine when I 1st got it. Soaked the whole area in WD 40 overnight. Then made up a brass drift (same diameter as the swinging arm bolt) and smacked the crap out of it until it budged.... :banghead:

Thanks for the reply but on my CR250 the swing arm does not go through the engine cases, there is brackets that are mounted to the engine cases that the swingarm bolt goes through, I'm dumb but i ain't that dumb!! :D:D

On the bright side i've got the swingarm bolt to spin when i turn the nylock nuts, but the bolt still moves when i lift up the swingarm, i guess i will keep soaking it and see what happens.

Well I never mate...you learn everyday....The '82 430 swinging arm bolt goes straight through the back of the engine without rear engine plate. I just assume the '81's were the same....:doh:

Not sure what you mean we you say the bolt moves when you left up the swinging arm. Do you mean the bearings in the swinging arm are shagged and the arm has loads of play ?
 
81 250 was the old style engine dating back from 75....it was only the 81 430 that had the new style cases...the 250 only got new cases in 82 along with non painted barrel and head like the 430. The swing arm bolt is stuck in the bearings which are held in the swing arm tubing so when the arm goes up and down the bolt [and nuts] moves as well....its not a design fault its just corrosion... especially if the bike was ridden in the wet/sand/mus etc then put away for 20 or 30 years as most of them are..... only time and soaking fluid plus heat from a hot air gun may eventually expand metal so it can be disassembled.
 
Well after soaking the swing arm in penetrating oil and plenty of heat from the heat gun, it looks like i will have to cut the swingarm bolt to get the swinarm out, because i havent had any luck with the heat or oil.

As soon as the swingarms off the engine will be removed and fully stripped and rebuilt, and the frame and swingarm will be bead blasted and powder coated, and ive ordered new fully adjustable Ohlins shocks from www.husqvarna-parts.com Phillip has been really helpfull with sorting out the shocks for me, they will start building them tomorrow and i should have them in 2 months
 
what about a fly press....if you can lay the bike on its side ...just done the rear wheel bearings on my BMW 535 m sport and it took a 20 tonne press!!! if not ....cut away young man !
 
Finally everything is apart, the bike was put on its side in a press, and even the press couldn't budge the swing arm bolt!! so it was cut out.
The bolt was pretty much welded to the bearing bush, i don't have any pics of it :mad:.
The engine is out and is being stripped down by my mates at my local Husky dealer, which is Firstclass Motorcycles in lilydale.
i took the frame and swing arm plus heaps of other bits to the powder coaters on monday and i should have it all back before easter, will post up pics of the results of the powder coating.
If i could work out how to use this Mac computer i would post up pics of the bike in bits just before being powder coated
 
I had a very reluctant s/arm bolt in a maico frame just recently .after smashing the nut (loose on the thread) with a big hammer many times with out much luck, i drilled a 3mm hole hole in each end of the swing arm near to the pivot bearings and squirted in a fair bit of diesel. 1 day of patience worked wonders. lubing from the outside just wasnt working.
I kept turning the bolt as well, it was not moving at all initially, but eventually began to move.(slowly)
Ill weld up the holes or could have grease nipples if i get super keen.i revived the abused nut by running a tap through it and machining the face. the thread was still ok on the bolt.

As far as my swing arm spindle goes it's definately siezed, im pretty sure i can get the engine out without removing the swing arm, but if someone could actually confirm if it's possible i'd appreciate it

Impossible.
Have a look at the tech info on this website. you should find a parts manual for your bike. Download it and print / bind it for your workshop. its invaluable for the issues your facing.

Little details like the actual length of a particular bolt are great when you have sent the whole lot to the platers and they are all in a pile!

Takes a little while to get the swing of the manuals as most pages are repeated due to the no of parts on each page but in working out what goes where, they are great.

Surely a new nut was warranted after that pressure session?!
 
i worked in a bike shop for a while in a past life and the cocky's ag bikes in for swingarm bearings were the Mr McHanics nightmare! 4 - 10 years in cow poo and salt country always made the job a hammer thrower!

Ive seen the swing arm bolts nearly sawn through from worn bushes..amazing

How did you go getting new bushings for the arm? the bearings are standard needle rollers but im told the bush is difficult to find in spares. hope you didnt throw it away in case you have to get a set machined up.
Do your local Husky guys have early model parts?

i've just recently got a workshop manual/parts manual for my bikes, when reassembling the bike the manuals will get plenty of use!

The bushings were easy to find, Phillip from Husqvarna-Parts helped me out with them
