  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

73 400 Cr Swingarm And Shock Extension

Husky 54

New to this forum it is well kept and imformative. Would like some ideas about swingarm extension and what to do about shocks afterwards for a 73 400 CR. Thanks.

Hey 54

In answer to your question regarding the swing arm you can switch it out for an arm from a '74 cr250 ... it's a bit longer and a straight fit. It makes a big difference. On the back I am running Falcon shock absorbers. Which so far have been great. www.falconshockabsorbers.co.uk (lots of other brands too)

See www.huskyjunk.com for all CR400 mods ... both engine and suspension

I am still struggling to get the front really dialed in ... a recent thread turned me on to a company called Race Tech who make a drop in 'emulator' which smoothes the front end out. http://racetech.com/page/id/64

My bike is mostly standard -The motor is fully rebulit and runs strong so I have really no need of any mods there -

If the engine is running well the only real work you need (in my opinion) is suspension - which your doing.

I did a thread on my restoration in the restoration section if your interested.

Good luck!

Tom

Thank you very much Rocket. Where can I find one of these swing arms? I will probably post a request in the buy and sell forum if you don't have a good lead. Yes my engine is totally rebuilt top and bottom very strong.
Thanks again for your help,

I would post here and on Marks vintage swap meet ... http://www.vintagemx.us (very good website)

Those arms come up and are a little more expensive as they are a popular mod. They are often refered to as a 'mag' arm as they come from the first magnesium cased Husky - the 74 cr250 (I think Im correct about that)

Good luck.

Huskyjunk.com has an original mag swingarm on the site right now for $200 and my dream suspension mod , a reproduction THOR swingarm for $495 . Tke web auction site that we will not name has " Mag " arms on it from time to time . My " Mag " had 12.5 in. shocks on it so that is the length I ordered for the Works Performance units I bought . Wish I had gone with a 13.0 or 13.5 in. length as it aids in making the front end stick a bit better for turning by slightly changing geometry . Some guys I know even went with 14.0 in. shocks but you can run into chain/swingarm clearance problems . AHRMA lets you run any length shock you want but wheel travel must be no more than 4.0 in. . Somewhere in the AHRMA website is a chart that shows the amount of visible shock shaft allowed to get the resulting legal wheel travel for a number of different bikes . Chain/shock clearance is also an issue with the " Mag " setup and my Works shocks must be mounted with the bodies down on the swingarm . Mount them " upside down " and the chain will chew on the springs . I would go with Ohlins if I had it to do over again and I could afford them . Keep us posted on your progress and good luck !

Thanks Huskydoggg for the picture. Now that I see the swing arm I think the rolling chasis I got along with the bike I bought has one these on it. I will check when I get home. I have no manuel what size forks or on the 73 400 CR? I want to check on the emulator Retro Rocket was talking about. Looks like a nice bike you have, do you race this one.

I have a 72 CR250 parts bike that has extended swing arm and Fox gas shocks, spring style. Shocks need rebuilt. PM if interested.
