    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

72 450CR silencer/spark arrestor

My 72 450 came with a Skyway silencer that is stamped " Forest Service approved spark arrestor".
Problem is that it appears that the spark arrestor,(screen), has been removed. Found this out today at riding area inspection!
Anyone know where/how to get this fixed? Or, know of anyone selling a complete silencer/spark arrestor that fit this bike? (Would love to get the old "bomb" style, as that is what was on my 72 Husky 40 yrs ago, but HAS to have a spark arrestor)

Wow...just spent hours searching the internet and NOTHING! Somebody has to have a silencer / spark arrestor for a Vintage Husky****************************************!
 
If your skyway is worth the effort you can put a new spark arrestor in it. I've done it with a little work. The spark arrestor cartridge in the 300 series Skyway is the same as the 300 series Cobra Sparky used on many 4 stroke exhaust systems. You can find them NOS on ebay for $40 or if you have the time watch you can get a used one that's cheaper.

To change the cartridge you remove the snap ring and pull out the silencer. The spark arrestor cartridge is at the bottom of the skyway can and is a tight fit. Heat up the can to enlarge it a bit and drive the cartridge out using a long drift pin, a 3/8 drive extension or something similar. If the silencer can has huge dents then you may have trouble. The new cartridge will be a tight fit going in. After cleaning the inside of the can and applying a little lubricant I drive them in using an 1-1/4" galvanized pipe cap. It fits perfect into the cartridge so as to distribute the force on the cartridge when installing it.
There you go, a new spark arrestor in your vintage Skyway silencer. :applause:

Thanks alot Crash! Got the old spark arrestor out pretty easily... the screen had been removed. Ordered the Cobra off eBay...should be a done deal!:thumbsup:

Question: The packing material in the silencer is pretty thrashed and about 1/3 of it is missing. Do you know what to use to replace this?

you will find many many opinions about packing, everyone has their favorite. i used pink panther home insulation for quite awhile but lately have been using proper packing. i like the long strand style (which i think is what you just bought)
 
When I was building my '70 400 I aquired a stock pipe that had a welded on Krisman spark arrestor. When I put it on the bike I heard rattling inside so I took the clip out and slid out the core. Part of the spark arrestor had been modified for whatever reason so it was basically non existent. I went to the bike shop and bought a Pro Moto Billet cone style 4 stroke screen. The diameter was the same as the Krisman. It went right in and there was no performance issues.
