  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

FE/FC 701E ABS System REMOVAL

Guys
I want to get rid of the entire ABS System on my 701E, including the wheel sensors and sensor rotors and install direct braided brake lines, as per any dirt bike.
What I'd like to know is if doing this will interfere / cause issues with the ECN or speedo (I'm not sure if the front ABS sensor doubles as a speed reader)

I would very much appreciate any advise or info on experience in doing this.

PLEASE no comments on "just turn the ABS off". No, I want to remove it all.

Though I havent done this procedure to a 701, I have to a few roadracing bikes that keep the stock ECU. Your best, easiest way to do it is to simply bypass the ABS pump/module by running the brake lines direct and letting the ABS "think" its still working. This way you can leave all the sensors installed in case down the road you sell the bike and the buying customer wants ABS. It's a nightmare to remove the ABS from the CAN system unless you have a dedicated race ecu and harness. Cheers!

Thanks for that. I'll look further into this.
I do know now that the front ABS sensor doubles as a speed sensor so will need to at least keep that in place. But that probably runs directly into the ABS system, just behind the radiator I think it is. From there it must split off into the dash. If I can find a way of directing the cable straight into the dash that would be all I need to do. Then I can just rip out the entire ABS system.

yeah, but it's a lot more complicated than that. Any sensor, once it's unplugged, will give an ECU active fault which "could" cause the bike to go into Limp mode never mind the annoying Check Engine Light that will always be on... Without going too in depth, the speed sensor that triggers the dash also gives a signal to the ECU.

I'd recommend installing the Supermoto ABS dongle which turns the rear ABS off completely, and makes the front ABS rarely engage. (works well btw)

Or... sell it and buy a older non ABS KTM 690 Good luck!

Pull the rear sensor off and then pull the fuse. That's all you can do.

I think I'm residing to the fact that short of replacing the odometer, I can't remove the system.
But disabling the rear altogether sounds appealing.

Couple of questions:
Do you know which fuse it is?
Once the fuse is removed will the front ABS still work?
Is the rear sensor cable hard wired into the loom or is it attached via a connector? (If the cable isn't removable from the loom without any chopping I'll not bother)

Any images that you attach will be greatly appreciated.

There is an easily installed Dongle (Got mine from Rottweiler) that permanently disables the rear ABS. If for any reason you want to restore the rear, simply unplug the dongle.
