    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

610 seat height a bit tall, lower seat?

i find that when i have the race sag on my 610 set at 4", the seat height of the bike is a little tall which makes it difficult on occasions when i need to put a foot down (i have short legs!).

an idea i had was to remove the seat, trim back some of the foam and replace it with something a little softer. my thoughts were that this would lower the seat height a little and possible make the ride a bit more comfortable?

thoughts? this may be a silly idea so i thought i would put it out there first.

Shaving the seat is a popular option. Since the stock foam is such garbage, most generally go for a seat upgrade at the same time and have it made lower with a superior grade foam. Seat Concepts, XPC Racing, Renazco and a variety of other custom seat makers can do this for you.

Another option is to lower the suspension. Properly done with internal spacers, this reduces suspension travel and ground clearance, so it's preferable to avoid this unless it's necessary.
 
ok, so it is not such a dumb idea - great! it will also be a diy job cos i am a tight ar$e!

any thoughts if it would be better to simply trim off the top inch or take off a bit more and replace with softer foam? i guess only trimming it back would make it harder which might be bad for longer trips.

i also just read of this method over on thumpertalk

"You can make the seat a lot more comfortable by marking on the seat where your weight is when on the bike, removing the seat, taking off the cover, take foam off base carefully, cork bore 2cm holes in (small circles cut out) the foam where your wegith sits from the bottom of the foam up to the top- MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT BORE ALL THE WAY THROUGH****************************************! you MUST leave approx 1-2cm of foam depth or the seat cover shows all your cork bores AND it aint very comfy!, drill 2-3 of these holes across the width of the seat - repeat 2 -3 lines of these- ensure you leave enough foam so it has enough strentgh to still hold you off the seat base!!

remount on base, recover and enjoy a softer foam seat minus the expence!"

cheers, but did u miss my post about being a tight ar$e :)! i will try a diy job fist then if i screw it up i will buy new foam.
 
I am a fan of Seat Concepts too. If you DIY, chances are you won't end up with as good a seat. It's all about the foam used. I have had seats reworked and bought complete seats by the popular makers. None have been as good as SC.

No, I didn't miss that comment.

The stock foam is HORRIBLE. If you're going to bother with changing the seat at all... do it once, do it right. $144 is cheap. A custom seat from Corbin, Mayer, Russell, Renazco, etc will run you at least $450.

Seriously, upgrade the foam. Your ass is worth it.

SeatConcepts is by far the least expensive upgrade option. And I have to echo Xcuvator's comment about DIY often not working out that well.
 
well i went ahead and butchered my seat. worked out pretty well. a few pics for anyone interested....

marking it out. i am going to replace about 2 inches or a bit less.

made a template of the old seat out of a beer carton so i could keep a similar shape.

bought some softer foam from a local supplier and simply glued it to the seat and clamped it overnight. then used the stencil to draw the line of the old seat and fired up the bread knife again. bit rough but hey, so am i!

result... sits about 1-1 1/2 inches lower and much softer. definately not as flash as a professional job but will do for me!

I just did something similar but left the removed foam out. Seat is now wider under your butt and ~1" lower. Forgot to take a before pic.
