  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Question for the 530 owners:
Did you do the 450 to 530 or 510 to 530? (I know its less work starting w the 510, just wondering)
Did you use the RR cams and if so was it both in/ex cams?
If not who used the TC cams?
Since some 510's had con rod problems due to it being a stroked 450, is the same thing happening with the 530 kit in? I'm not sure how a bored and stroked motor would fix the con rod issue other than probably the angle/position the con rod is at since there is more travel room for the piston...

I'm not diving into anything right now, I was just wondering/gathering more info.
This seems like a fun project to do and is heavily influencing me to get a 510!

I started with a 450. I had bought a 2 hour old 530rr crank from a buddy across the pond. He converted his 530rr to a 450rr. I kept the stock smr cams. I didn't want to hot rod the motor anymore. 530 was enough. It does rev alot slower but that's why I like it so much. It pulls like a freight train with little effort. And the motor is smooth as butter. I'm crediting alot of the smoothness to the FAG bearings I bought from George. Night and day difference.

I converted my SMR 450 to the 530. Got a freshly rebuilt crank, bought the balancer gear and case studs. So far have about 20hrs on it and it's still flawless. I'm going with the assumption that any big bore 4 stroke crank has a finite life. I did not go with any special cams as, at the time I didn't know there was anything available. I'd imagine though the cam (cams) would help top end air flow. My 530 flattens out above 9000 rpm. Seems like it's choked for more flow. I'm not complaining tho, as I still keep ahead of SVX 550s.

The RR cams sound like something that'll be awesome to have but not necessary. If I did this I probably wouldnt NEED the RR cams I was just wondering if they were recommended due to the bigger size of the motor overall? I would like to hear if anyone has tried the TC cams since I've read those are a step above the regular cams but a step below the RR cams

Also anyone know if there is a different oil pump that is used/needed?
And to clarify, if you started w a 450 would you need cams off of a 510 or would the stock 450 cams work w the cam chain?

I used TC 450 cams as I had a spare engine. I compared the SMR to the TC cams and they verniered out the same. Maybe the TE cams are different. You have to use the 510 cam chain. Think of it this way; the 510 is a stroked 450. The 530 is a bored 510. You can machine the cylinder to fit the 450 to a 480.

Thanks for clarifying about the differences between the motors, it's what I read before but wasn't sure I interpreted it right. If I was to do it I'd probably start with a 510, props to you guys that put in the extra work starting with the 450!

You can use the stock 450 cams. But since the 450 stroke is 5mm shorter than the 510 you will need a new cam chain. It's not that much more work. You need a 510 crank and chain. Check out my complete rebuild thread. Step by step.
