  • Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

    Thanks for your patience and support!

Looking at photos of Hermunen's old race bike, it looks like they chucked a bomb of an oil catch can on there during earlier races, seemed to disappear during later races;

With that style of getup, would it drain back down the tube into the crank once the engine is off?

Noticed a few other things, there seems to be an extra large cutout over the rear shock chamber with something hiding in there (photo above). Something else which caught me eye was the circular looking thing on the left side next to the cylinder in these photos;

Annoyingly the guys from Zupin said the intake snorkel on his bike is a factory bit so unobtanium!

I know why they chucked that breather bottle, it doesn't work. Oil will not flow back into the engine through the breather port, it's a one way ticket. I don't know what that other thing is, I'll ask Ty. If I had to guess, it's an overflow bottle for the radiators.

Little black hose is about the size of the rad overflow tube and is in the same location as the OEM tube. Looks a little more professional than my ghetto redbull can held on with cable ties haha. I've bought a motionpro coolant recovery thing but there's nowhere on the bike to really hide it out of harms way.

I got one of those PCV filter units and with a bit of extra hose and a custom joint I was able to mount the filter right beside the rad cap. Hopefully that will be enough hose and enough height to stop oil pissing out the top. Regardless the top portion of the tube is clear so I will be able to see if oil is collecting rather than flowing back into the crankcase. It was all pretty simple and inexpensive.

In a similar note, I swapped out a piece of clear tubing for the airbox drain. I also made it longer so it will hold more fluid. A short, black drain tube with a plug isn't all that useful.

I hope soon an affordable kit and/or simple sound solution is found. Until then I used a few ideas i found in many cafe husky posts.

I sealed up the left hole and glued a plastic hose I found on my bench in the other hole. Ones you buy for gas cap breather hose from the bike shops work great. Allows the oil to drain away from the top of the engine by diverting this oil under the bike. **Not A EPA approved design :eek: Be careful how you route this hose, I hit the exhaust once and melted the plastic tubing :lol:

Does anyone know what could cause the oil puking into the air box other than improper oil level? I have hot oil level of just above the bottom of sight glass but still alot of oil migration to the air box.

I see that some guys have problems and some dont. Are you riding a 449 or 511? I wonder if the amount of time on a motor would make a difference as to how much oil gets pushed into the airbox. ?????

The bikes that do not have this oil issue are running their oil levels too low. This is just a poor design by BMW and no breather bottle has been incorporated like on regular Huskys. If you run your oil level too low, then there is insufficient oil coverage on the torque limiter which will lead to failure. If you run the oil level at the capacity it was designed to be, then you must have a breather bottle to contain the blow by and return it to the crankcase.

I think a little extra oil on the frame and in the air box in exchange for proper bottom end lubrication is a good trade.

My problem seems to be getting worse. I'll try the breather bottle, but I wonder if anything wrong in the engine could make the oil migration to the air box worse than it normally would be.

Where would one get a breather bottle?

Current breather bottles are prototypes. Not sure when Toxic's will be ready for release. My new breather bottle is totally different than before.

What's that? Haven't seen much on that since late last year. Is it smaller? Would like to see the new design.

It is smaller and stainless steel. Fits on right side of the engine with clearance for a megabomb header. All welded bungs and AN fittings instead of hose clamps. Still waiting on parts coming in to complete. I will post pictures when complete and installed.

Another thing to watch for is over oiling the air filter; extra oil will puddle up in the box and drool all over the head when you stand it upright. I let my filter drip overnight before installing. It's amazing how much can come out of a freshly oiled filter.
