  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

430cc and 500cc pipes?

The engine is completely new bottom and top with about 5 hrs on it and it takes a good kick to turn it over but I just took my first compression and it only 100 cold so I need to see what happened in the top end.

is that kicking with the throttle fully open till the needle quits climbing? if so, yes thats pretty low compression, and it probably wants very small jets with that much blowby/low compression.

100 psi is unacceptable at any stage. they should be very very close to full compression right at assembly. have you seen a two stroke do otherwise? like jump up 70 psi?
just out of curiosity, how was this broke in?

The 430s are hard to get an accurate reading because of the primary ratio not kicking it over fast enough, same problem that makes them hard to start. If you could kick it over faster I'm confident you would get a much higher reading.

In doing a compression test on my fresh Top End on my Maico 490 I could only get 80 psi out of it as well. I was working on the usual hard to start with the Kick Starter easy to bump start scenario. Since the Bike starts easy bump starting it I bump started it with the compression tester in it just to see what happens. I got 180 psi.

that's a good idea, and a simple one
how else will you spin it fast enough?
thought about spinning the crank, but,, stay away from the mag nut as the threads are quite small
so that leaves pulling the clutch cover, your idea wins :applause:

awesome idea, never thought of that

broke in engine by riding it for about 20-30 min 1/2 throttle or less with light load letting it cool then re-tourque head. Then 3/4 throttle same procedure then full throttle. I have a two ring wiseco piston with 4 thousands clearance. I thought of rolling it down in forth gear and retake compression because of the kicking problem but have not had time. I will do that today and also check compression at operating temp. I have always checked compression with throttle closed and will see if there is a difference with throttle open. I will have all the results today and thanks for the input.

also kick it till it quits climbing psi. how fast it climbs psi is of no importance. you must always open the throttle fully. i wouldnt be surprised if the bike does actually have compression

Guys: Compression results bump starting cold & hot 155 psi closed throttle, 160 open throttle. Since compression was good I decided to check muffler and found that the perforated pipe had cracked at the end and fell down away from end cap restricting exhaust. I re-welded it and bike ran much better. I also had timing full retarded within spec and went to mid retarded position. With both of those fixes the bike gets 4 gear wheelies in stead of only 2 gear wheelies and revs out farther and now runs like I thought it should. I still need to fiddle with carb as bike still needs to start a little easier especially when cold and it seem to still run a little hot, but the power is now there so I am happy. Thanks for all the help.
