• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

40mm flat side carb

Where can I get needle jets for the 40mm flat side carbs? Are the round slide 40mm carbs the same?

Unfortunely my carb guy from 30 years ago passed away

What brand of carburetor? There is no replaceable needle jet in the Mikuni or Keihin flat slides, you use different needles.

that sucks..so these arent really as tuneable? i know what you are thinking too..why leave the vm unless you are doing a "real" upgrade...like a leccy..

I just buy a assortment of larger needles and I have main jets from the round slides they should fit?

Exactly. They are not as tunable and they are much much harder to get right, and then when you get them right they are less likely to stay right as altitude or humidity or temperature changes. For a very meager (and I think unnoticeable from the saddle) increase in CFM you get a massive headache in return. Either stick with the VM or go all out and get a Lectron in my opinion.

The main jets are the same.

I tuned the round slide 40mm on my 390cr. She was a mean ride but ballastic so ballastic it took an experienced rider. Changed the needle jet to a smaller one then jet it down but I installed a UFO in it that's the game changer it's all about the flow.

Sorry, been there done that ! The Lectron solves just about all the issues. If I knew then what I do now, I would have spent less time messing with jetting and more time in the pub

I tuned a 40mm round slide to perfection. There's a process we have to follow to tune a standard stock carb it's not hard. You need to make sure the needle and seat isn't leaking and the float level is set right. Start off with the stock jets and needle in the third position. Make sure the idle is low not too fast. Using a hand held tach we adjust the balance screw for the best low speed. You may have to adjust the balance screw more till the idle speed and balance is right. We want the carb on the low speed circuit. I go big on the main jet till its blubbery. Then go smaller on the jet till its running cleaner.
Your next step is the needle your looking for a smooth transfer. Once the needle is adjusted the balance may need to be tweeted to clean up the last little bit of roughness if there is any.

Having a good needle and seat and the float level being set right is very important. The more we do it the better we get at it. I can't hear good so a hand held tach helps.

It works the first few times hang in there. Stay with it. Don't forget I use the UFO adapter on the bottom of the round slide. The gas has a smoother flow. You will end up with one or two sizes smaller in the Jets. The UFO makes a big difference in the smoothness of the carbs response.

It's fun not work I enjoy it. I tinker with it between doing other things if it gets on my nerves.

I was minding my own business jetting my 81 250cr when a cop pulled up and said I can see your an adult. I was jetting it in the street in front of my house. It had a ATV plate. I went to the dealer and bought a new '98 Husqvarna 250wr street legal. I tore the streets up for two summers. Yup I'm a adult.

you should look inside a lectron..and you would realize a stuffer in the slide of a vm doesnt compare to the way the flat slide lectron is. way smoother..a lectron is taper bored as well if you really want to get fancy...
some of us here are pretty comfortable with the process of tuning a carb, thats why we like the leccy so much.

You are not understanding what I am trying to get across to you. There is a very good reason not many bikes had them spec'ed as OEM and why they disappeared as OEM equipment after only a couple of years, you will find out why soon enough.
