  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

310r spark plug gap?

bent70

Husqvarna
AA Class
I finally got around to pulling my tank and got the plug out....black and slightly wet, probably from just gassing it to try and start. Anyways what is the proper gap for the new plug?
Back story.....bike started bogging out with no power at any throttle input slightly over idle. Fuel pump seems to flow well....so this is the next thing

In the 2013 WSM for the 310r, the gap is specified at 0.031"-0.035" (0.8mm-0.9mm). I generally use 40 thousandths = 1 millimeter; it's pretty close.

good luck.

Any news?

...and I agree with the diagnosis of a dirty injector or fuel delivery problem. Assuming the air intake and exhaust are okay.

And if that's not it, it might be the infamous CTS (coolant temperature sensor, sometimes called a WTS in manuals. $15-20 IIRC).

I dunno what a failing TPS acts like but consider it. Also, in this thread, Joe P. had a (I believe) failing ignition pickup/trigger in the stator- you might think about that too.

sorry, i never got a plug and just started riding my ktm this whole time. ill try and get one and go from there. thanks for the possible ideas. whats the deal with the cts? i know my fan temp sensor failed a long time ago and i have just been jumping the fan wire.

CTS- I really don't know, but it has a failure mode where it sends erroneous info (or no info?) to the ECU; and the ecu either goes in limp-home mode or starts using some weird corner of the injection map. [caveat: this is sorta my understanding of the problem, I'm no efi expert]. Purportedly, a simple install of the cheap temp sensor can cure it sometimes.

Enough people have experienced this that I'm sorta considering having BMP send me one down just to put on the shelf.

BTW, the 449/511's cool cs sprocket/swingarm pivot system is called CTS (constant tension system? WAG) so context matters when you hear "CTS".

Good luck.

ps- I used to live in Pacifica until the early '70s... back then you could ride dirt pretty much from Daly City to Santa Cruz without too much effort (kinda paralleling the San Andreas); there were also 2 official riding areas in town (Mori's Pt and San Pedro Pt). Seems like there was some riding somewhere on your side too (Oyster Pt? Hunter's Hill? Coyote Pt? I CRS) and there were short track races at the Cow Palace. fun times.

pps- on your bike, the fan is controlled by a simple bi-metallic switch in-line with the RH radiator hose; not the ECU. I've been running w/o a fan for almost a year now- no problems. I did install a small 2oz overflow tank.

Ill look into that.....its cheap enough.
Yea, the 449/511 cts is great. The feeling of traction is awsome, i wish i could have traded my bike then and tnere when i tried it out.
To bad times have changed and endangered butterflies keep us from riding locally....there used to be a few spots on this side and even in parts of san francisco according to my old local hobby shop owner. Sad

Well installed new plug and same issue. Bike will start, but once throttle is opened further than idle it pops and dies. I pulled the injector and shot some cleaner into the inlet and pulled the fuel pump. The fuel pump top cap to the housing wasn't clipped to the lower and needed the arms bent outward to positively snap into the lower housing. There also was white shavings around the bottom plate near the two gas inlet holes on the housing. The filter/strainer attached to the pump seemed ok...just a little too. I tested the battery when started and while opening the throttle and voltage doesn't drop....so idk. Maybe the injector is still clogged or something else. How do you clean the injector at home?

home-style injector cleaning: there's a handful of different methods on youtube- do a search. basically, (after soaking the injector) most of 'em call for filling the fuel line with carb cleaner, putting the fuel line under air pressure, and activating the injector with a 9v battery. Most methods are fancier. I've never done it; you teach us.

good luck.
