  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

FE/FC 2017 FE 501 Fuel tank options

I'm just about to order a 2017 FE 501 but am held back by lack of fuel tank options. I will be heading out to Morocco in about 5 weeks and need more fuel range if I go with this bike. I see a lot of people have used the acerbis 4.1 gallon tank on 14-16 FE's and like the look of this tank. I just can't seem to find any information regarding the 17MY and aftermarket tanks.

3.0 tank....like the fit-form-function. Would like to go bigger. But I'll have to see how many miles I can squeeze out of this.

It does look a good fit, retaining the original shrouds. Did you have it confirmed that the bigger tanks are not available for the 2017MY.

Thats what I thought and it's currently holding me back from buying the 17 FE 501. I notice that acerbis do list the 4.1 gallon tank for the 17 EXC 500. I'd much rather buy the husky though! I'm guessing the EXC tank would fit but not sure how well. Looking at pictures the plastics and shrouds are completely different between the EXC and the FE. I spoke to Acerbis UK and they weren't able to offer any advice.

Do you have a ride report on your fuel range with the 3.0 gal. And were you able to use your old fuel fitting?

On my 17 FE 450 with the Ascerbis 3.1 I was getting around 50 to 60 MPG of fairly aggressive riding in Death Valley a couple of weeks ago. I felt pretty comfortable that I could go 150 miles but also carried a Liter of gas in an MSR bottle.

I was able to use the fittings provided by Ascerbis but had to cut the OEM fuel line and use a small hose clamp to adapt it. Incidentally, I just installed the 4.1 tank on a buddy's new KTM 500 and had to do the same thing on the fuel fitting. Ascerbis did a good job of packaging the larger tank on the bike but the shrouds no longer can be screwed to the OEM mounting on the radiator louvers--had to use some fabbed brackets to keep the shrouds.

I purchase a factory KTM 90-degree adapter - part#77707988017. I wasn't that impressed with the setup Acerbis provided with the tank. Works perfect.

yeah, it seems Ascerbis provides a nice tank but everything else (fittings and instructions etc) are really marginal.

I just received the new ims 3.6 for my 17 te300. Pretty sure they have it for the 4 strokes as well.
Call Slavens to verify.

IMS is making a 4.5 gallon tank for the 2017 four-strokes, just got confirmation today. Uses brass inserts for mounting hardware. Waiting for photos to see how it fits with the side panels and whether it uses the stock shrouds or not.

I talked to IMS today, the Husky tanks are in stock. Apparently the tank extends around the radiator to act as a shroud, but the plastics still go on the tank. I'm guessing for cosmetic reasons mostly. Also will require a 90° adapter.
