    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

At 2400 miles on my 15 fe 501s. I experienced my first mechanical/ electrical failure. I recently noticed my bikes radiator cooling fan was not running and coolant was overflowing from the radiator cap overflow. After diagnosing a bad thermo switch in the right radiator I decided to wire the fan via a hot wire from the positive battery terminal through a fuse and a toggle switch I mounted to the headlight shell I grounded the circuit to the lower speedo mount on the upper triple clamp. See pic. So far its a fix. No boil overs yet. I run the fan once the engine is warm and only shut it off at highway speeds. I've heard these big bore KTM engines run hot at low trail speeds especially on hot days. I've also heard talk of people deleting their coolant thermostat. Does anyone here have any input on thermostat removal on these bikes.I would never remove a thermostat from a car. I have ordered a 4" universal puller fan from Summit Racing USA to mount on the left radiator. I will wire it in series with the stock right side fan. Its only May and a cool one at that. Soon I will be riding In the triple digits. most of my riding is on pretty fast trails I do from time to time get stuck in slow traffic leaving town. This is how my last boil over occurred and I'm not sure if it would have happened had the fan been functioning.
 
I just wanted to clarify something here and now. I had mentioned I would wire a second fan in series with my stock fan on the left radiator. I did not mean I would literally wire a series circuit with one positive lead from one fan going to the negative lead of the other fan. I was merely stating that both fans would end up being powered by the same power source wired to the same fuse and toggle switch. I received my Universal 4 inch puller fan from Summit Racing today. The setup turned out really clean and seems to work great. I got to test the set up in 90f+temperature today. I also added Engine Ice propylene glycol performance coolant and a 30psi. High performance radiator cap. I am considering a thermostat delete hose kit next to prepare for triple digit summer riding temps. Be cool.Throttle on!
 
I thermo delete all my offroad bikes. For me it's one less item to break and yes I had one housing break from another brand. If you don't ride in cold weather below 35*F there should not be any problems. Just remember the warm up time is a bit longer.

I ran Engine Ice and had good results but had some overheat issues in very tight snail speed trails on other brands. My fix was Evans and it also remove any high (er) pressures in the system. Also Engine Ice runs a tad cooler then Evans. Normally my coolant temps aren't high and the fan almost never runs on our FE250 after the thermo delete.
 
IMO, Unless you are Ice racing or riding in extreme sub zero temps then get rid of any thermostat on a dirt bike and use aftermarket coolant.
 
You should always use aftermarket coolant. Protection of internal parts/surfaces and last forever if you are the type to hold onto bikes for,,,, well forever.

positive input. It was my gut feeling that the cooling thermostat was not needed on this bike. I always take the time to let my bikes come up to operating temperature before ridding. I almost got in an argument with someone from my local KTM dealership on this subject yesterday. I really wish they would not let people with no technical knowledge of these bikes speak to their customers. Several times the owner of the shop has given me bad information including trying to tell me that my clutch master cylinder uses magura mineral oil. I know KTM and Husqvarna have been using Dot 4 brake fluid in there Brembo hydraulics for a few years! Yesterday while speaking with the same person I realized he was not aware that there was a difference between the cooling systems on the race bikes and dual sport versions of the same bike. He tried to advise me to leave my thermostat in place and keep an eye on it as he acknowledged there have been failures.
They have been helpful at times however they're not genius and they don't always have the answers to my questions This is why I am here at Cafe husky I recognize there are a lot of people here who have much experience with these bikes.
 
you will notice the fan on the left isn't centered perfectly. I did have to shoehorn it in so to speak to make it fit with my IMS 3.2 gallon gas tank.
 
I just felt my fan turn on for the very first time in 700 miles... but maybe it's because I was wearing shorts, or maybe because it's summertime now lmao I'm just glad to know it works

Do you have the link to thefan youinstalled? How did you wire it in? Any photos?

I see your install and I raise you this. Notice the toggle switch on the handle bars. Also I was able to get the fan fully over the radiator. To do this you need to orient the fan exactly as I have to make it fit with the gas tank. Its the same spal fan as the stock one. I ordered mine on amazon for $60. its the 4" low profile puller fan. I still need to get some tiny zip ties to clean up the wiring, and change my radiator fluid to engine ice.

I apologize I've been off line for a while. The fan I used came from Summit racing USA. I love summit. They have literally millions of parts in stock. They are super prompt with their shipping and very helpful on the phone. They now also specialize in motorcycle parts. Summit has a great selection of electric fans for all types of vehicles and projects. I installed an 8 inch spal on the way oversized custom installed transmission cooler on my Toyota truck.I even found one to mount to my intercooler hood scoop to help cool the turbo side of my engine bay in my turbo charged Subaru. I don't have the exact part number for the fan I used on my husky however the summit racing menu is real easy to use and navigate. You can select the size of the fan the direction of air movement and whether it's a push or a pull type and go from there. Theyhave literally tens of thousands of Electric fans for your cooling project. They do an excellent job of giving product descriptions and dimensions as well as mounting details etc. summit just rocks!
