• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Mine has a brand new battery, brand new bendix - this was from a newer model so I added a new crown gear from Slavens and bushes, shimmed. Pulled the starter apart and cleaned it and put all back together.

Even with new bendix, it doesnt throw the gear, it just spins.

What do i look at next?

Did you mark the starter magnet assembly before you disassembled it?
It has not got any locating lugs and if you rotate it the motor will run poorly or backwards. Running backwards will cause the Bendix to never spin out.
Some housings have a line marking, some a faint paint mark. I'll find the article I found on the alignment and post it.

No i didnt mark it - but i did fully disassemble it, it was open circuit, fully jammed with mud, i cleaned and re assembled and it ran - but i never thought to check if it was spinning backwards - appreciate it if you have any details.

OK. In the attached photo you can see a small mark on each end cap. The will have been a ink pen marking from the factory that aligns with these marks. If you look very closely you may be able to find the marking and align it properly.

Worst case, ask a mate with the same bike to take the pinion end cap off a good motor (after marking the case) and use that as a benchmark to align yours. it will be trail and error (rotate the housing 180 degrees) to get it running in the right direction but you'll get it fixed.
I couldn't find the article I was looking for. Probably due to the PhotoBucket hosting removing access issue.
Good Luck.

thanks mate - i'll pull it apart and tackle this tomorrow and let you know how i go.

MUCH appreciated!

Well buggar me...i rotated the centre barrel 45deg and bang it starts. MANY THANKS!!!

Originally this bike didnt estart when i bought it, i took a punt on battery issue. Got it home, super muddy in there, good battery, siezed bendix and open circuit starter. Cleaned the starter and replaced bendix - work once. New battery, starter adjusted (but on the last few starts on these brushes), new bendix and crown and it start sooooo easy :) Thanks again!!!
