  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

I can't remember, but M26 x 1.0 sounds familiar. You're not going with the stock puller, I take it?

edit: per wag's post further down, it's M26 x1.5mm RH threads.

Do you want to borrow one or just buy one? I have one, but I don't remember where I got it from and want to keep it.
I could loan if you want to pay the shipping. I like to think we should stick together in the smaller community of non KTM Husky bikes.

Thanks for the offer. I picked one up on e-bay $25.00 bucks shipped. It is 26mm x 1.5 pitch.
Do you do anything special on installing the flywheel like heating the center of the flywheel,
lapping with valve grinding compound, tapping it on with a socket and hammer, locktite ?

No problem.
I wouldn't do anything special on installing the flywheel unless there is fretting on the crank or inside the flywheel. Look at the key to be sure it is in good condition and torque the nut well. Lapping runs the risk of making the surfaces uneven if not done just right. With modern materials, hardening, and machine methods lapping is rarely needed.

I suppose it depends on why you're taking the flywheel off:
  • Sheared key? yeah, I'd probably lap it after looking for damage.
  • Bad sprag? maybe or maybe not... the flywheel/crank held out for this long.
  • New flywheel (or crank)? yep.
  • replacing ring or worm: maybe or maybe not... the flywheel/crank held out for this long.
if you do lap it: go easy; use layout fluid (dykem/prussian blue or a sharpie)

and thanks for posting the flywheel puller with the thread size... it'll help future readers.

I've fixed numerous shared keys as follows with no future problems.

check fitment with Prussian Blue.
I use a little Loctite 609 after a light lap with valve lapping compound to scuff up the surface a bit.
I tourque to about 85 NM a little more than spec.

This fix has never failed.

Thanks for the help.
Did the lapping compound and Loctite torque to 85mn
Found that a Kawasaki kx 450 item # 510A3200 Woodruff key will work.
With some tape on the flywheel (not to scratch it) and a oil filter wrench
to hold the flywheel and torque the nut.
