  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

2013 TE310r Electric start issues

I don't know of any. The gear on the one way clutch is cupped. Sometimes people see this and feel it's worn but it's cupped by design.

This is a great thread. I am prepping to do this job as soon as the part arrives! I am searching for the retainer tool. I may purchase one if need be. Airrider is hooking me up with fly wheel puller! He is the man! These parts are back ordered everywhere but I was able to locate one! They also have a new part # I will attach that as well in the day or so.

We have a few members in the Jersey area. I'm in South Jersey around Cherry Hill and Rich is up your way. I have tool but loaned it out last week to a friend.

Hi guys so my 2012 TE 310 is starting to have the starting problem described in this thread, the odo is only at about 1400k but I imagine I need the gears as well I have switched batteries with my 2011 TXC250 and it still has the same problem. (struggles to turn over or doesn't turn at all). I'm attaching a picture I managed to get a camera in there and snap a photo before I order the $300 gear set so if everyone can confirm my starter gears are pretty much toast I would feel better about ordering the new hardened parts!? The gear set I need is on page one of this thread.. correct? Thanks much guys!

It's a little worn, but I have seen far worse.

This is a never ending problem. The E-start is marginal at best even when set up perfectly.

Consider pulling it all out and installing a TC cover on the hole.

Your kick only bike will be 6lbs lighter and never break again.

I have a TXC 250 as well so weight is not an issue besides the thing that attracted me too these little bikes is the e-start!! LOL. My TXC250 starts perfect every single time as fast as you hit the button it starts so I'm assuming the 310 should start the same being almost identical motors! I will order the gears and be done with it that little wear is enough to cause it to not turn over at all like a car with no power going up hill it sure tries to turn though but wont turn over maybe about 50% of the time, the other 50% it turns over and starts it but barely.
Joedirt: Sorry that was CDN $300 for them gears here in Canada and I will get a discount from that as well.

Just went through this whole saga! Ended up replacing the gears and then the starter! After a while the starter gets fried because it cant handel the binding up. Now could a starter alone fix your problem? Maybe but chances are you will chew another starter up again. THe E-start is what attracted me as well. I have only had Kick start and really was tried of it especially cause I am short so I decided to spend the $$ and Fix it. It works Perfect now! So lets hope it lasts! Good Luck! Keep us posted!

I think it really depends on how much you ride, how long you ride, and the conditions. If you ride hard, long, or race. You will continue to throw starters. If you're a weekend rider and don't take it hard I think you could get 200+ hours out of one. Everyone is different. One thing that will prolong the life is to only use them when the bike is cold or you're under the gun.

I try to stop next to a tree, as leaning the bike to hold it makes it silly easy for me. I just went through this in the spring and since have really gone back to kicking it.

Yes, the whole E-start is marginal and is frankly a wear item. 200 hrs is good if it last that long. Some say about 200 starts. My 250 has 130 hrs and it been through 2 starters and 2 flywheels and 3 gears. The 2nd set of starter gears did not wear at all but the sprag stuck the flywheel to the gear and I have never been able to get it apart. It is still on my work bench to this day all locked up. It is starting to act up when hot again and I barely use it now.

OTOH, I have it tuned quite well and it starts 1-2 kicks.

TDC...long steady kick all the way to the bottom.....start...ride.

Thanks Jimmy250 I hope I'm catching it before burning up the starter like I said the bike only has about 1400k on it so not a lot of use! My little TXC250 works awesome and has more miles on it and the electric start works perfectly as I assume the 310 will once I sort this worn gear issue out. Having a wicked bike with electric start is awesome removing the starter because it don't work right seems odd to me if working correctly as my TXC250 does with a fresh battery it will last years the 250 has WAY more than 200 starts I bet 1000-2000 more likely when I make my YouTube videos I bet I start it 50 times per day!! LOL Fresh battery good clean hardened gears = longevity fix those bikes guys there made to work! Cheers!

Good Luck Keep me posted If you have any challenges hit me up! Get to work, LOl

Got the new gears in Friday and rode all day today (Saturday) it started like a new bike all day long, hot, cold in gear didn't matter! Those old gears had just broken through the hard surfacing just enough to make them sticky instead of really slippery! Wow what a difference! I even have some starting evidence in my latest video have a look its at the very end if you don't want to watch all the way through! But if you like Husky's I recommend watching all the way through! HeHe.

Hmmm. Might have to bite the bullet and replace mine. Where did u get the new gears from? When I last checked there was no stock anywhere.

Hey Sorry for the delayed response I was away last week. I used Central Jersey Cycles, Eatontown NJ, My local Dealer stocks tons of parts but these gears are on back order in alot of places. He had them and he also had the Starter as well.

Bill,
My 2013 TE310R is frame number V000193. Can you help me get the warranty starter gear kit? It's starting to have issues, especially when hot. My buddies 2014 model doesn't have the same problem and appears to spin the motor over faster than mine.
Jim

Just order the gears from I think the first or second page of this thread problem solved! :) I have several long rides on my 2012 with the updated gears and everything starts like it should! :) It even starts in gear on hills hot cold doesn't matter it just works!

I have a coating that can be put on those gears that is far stronger than anything Husky puts on them. If anyone wants to guinea pig and pay to ship the gears to me and back, I will coat a set for free.

Wish I knew that before I installed them 2 months ago, but so far so good!
