  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

2013 TE 449 (Redhead) Oil Level

As a vendor who races, services and develops modifications for this product line, there should be no question that you have addressed a variety of issues your team and customers have encountered. I do not question the quality of the modifications you propose and provide. I do, however, wonder if some mods are as necessary as expressed for the typical owner. This thread: http://www.cafehusky.com/threads/highest-mileage-te-smr-449-or-511.31096/ would lead me to believe this bike is very capable of long, trouble-free service. So, while some owners do experience issues, many others do not, which makes me question just how dire the deficiencies of this engine are in general.

I can tell you from my experience with my bike that even though my TL hasn't failed, I'm happy to have put the breather mod and oil catch tank on my bike. I was ready to sell the bike over the oil spray alone, especially considering the cost of such an expensive mod that shouldn't have been necessary in the first place. Even if you don't think you are going to destroy a TL (I don't), do you feel comfortable running under 1000 ML of oil in such a tight engine? Do you feel comfortable not knowing exactly how much oil you have in your bike because it keeps spewing out? I'm running 1300 ML in my bike and rarely get any oil in my airbox now. And even if I do get a little, I know that just means I've overfilled it. And that few drops won't make any difference to the engines well being. Without the breather mod and catch tank and running 1000 ML the head and the front of my engine was drenched with oil on every ride -- no way of knowing how much was actually left in the engine.

There is no doubt the ZipTy oil tank solution is a good one and will for sure help prolong the life of this engine regardless of usage.
