  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Thanks,
My dealer keeps saying it doesn't have a compression release. My electric start won't turn the engine over when its fully warmed up and has burned up 2 starter motors and keeps telling me its the battery.

Maybe he needs to run iBeat and see iff there's an error code for a sensor or something.

My bike starts easily, although I can't say it's been really hot,

Other years have had sensor and starter motor issues but don't know that 2012 is same

It may NOT have a manual compression release, which is unfortunate, because I use my manual compression release to help me start mine when the starter won't quite get over the compression stroke. 99% of the time, when an engine is shut down, it coasts to a stop RIGHT ON the next compression stroke and at 13:1 compression, that takes some starting muscle.

Try leaning the bike hard to the right as you crank it when hot, make sure you are in neutral to ease the starting drag..

I'm disappointed that the 2012's STILL have this issue. I think that the electric start system on this bike is extremely inadequate.

I doubt its your battery, but you never know, it could be. I swapped two different Yuasa batteries in mine and then went to a Shorai model with no improvement. Originally, mine was difficult to start due to a faulty auto-decomp. The exhaust cam had been updated sometime in 2010 but mine still had the old cam. Yours shouldn't have that issue and you would know, because the kicking it would be like kicking against a brick wall. Here is a list of things to check based on numerous other threads on this topic:

Updated worm gear shaft and ring gear (supposedly there was a recall/bulletin on these parts in Europe for 2010 models)
Coolant Temp Sensor (swapped mine out, no improvement)
Exhaust cam auto decompressor (changed my cam and it improved its ability to kickstart (usually 1st or 2nd kick), but didn't help e-start)
Properly charged battery
Relays
Wiring problems (frayed wires, dirt water in connections, etc.) - checked mine and di-electric greased all connections, no improvement
TPS calibrated properly
EFI tuned properly
Flywheel - one theory was that there was a change in the design of the flywheel part way through 2010, but that should not affect your 2012
Woodruff key behind flywheel - one person said that their woodruff key bent over time and they thought that could possibly have caused the timing to get off over time

The last two things had my attention until this post. I had thought about buying a newer flywheel, but probably won't now as I don't think investing in these 2012 parts will fix the problem.

I replaced my starter in the fall, and the bike started nicely all winter even when ridden hard. Now that the temps are getting in the 80s above, my hard starting issues are back. I've officially given up and will not be replacing any more parts on this bike to cure the problem as I believe it is uncurable. The bike will just be kickstart-only and I'll hope that Husky changes this system in 2013 (but I won't hold my breath).

I love my Husky even with this problem, but I really wish they would get it fixed. The biggest problem seems to be that nobody in the right places acknowledges that there is a problem. Husky to dealer communication seems to be a joke. C'mon Husky...fix this problem on what is otherwise an awesome bike!

There was a thread that was updated within the last couple months or so here. The poster resolved starting issues. It was mentioned that the fitment and torquing of the starter were essential - ie: it's very fussy about that being just right. I don't recall the thread name, nor do I have a link, but you should be able to search for "starter" and look at posts updated in the last two months or so and find it.

With luck, perhaps it will help you resolve the problem. I have about 500 miles on my '11 TE310 and I've never had a problem starting it, cold or hot. So it IS possible.

I am really puzzled here there has been so many people with this issue so I have been waiting for my 2011 TE310 to be hard to start or not start at all but it hasnt happened. I have had the occasional lock up when using the E start Button when the bike has been really hot and I stall it but I have just had to pushed the button again and the engine starts straight away. My engine number ends 722 and frame number is ends in 604 and I bought the bike in March 2011 so I am not sure if it has updated parts fitted or not. I did take my bike back to the dealer just before the 1 year warranty ran out and I mentioned all the talk on here about hard starting and they couldnt find anything wrong with my bike and told me there was no updates to the starter. So after 2500 km and no issues I hope I dont starting having them but it seems if it is OK right from new then its OK and others have trouble from new and no matter what is changed they continue to have problems. May be the tension issue is the cause I will watch with interest.

Does the 2012 te 310 have an auto compression release that is activated when the elctric starter is used?
'

You might want to have your dealer check your valves. It could be caused by too much compression. A friend's 2012 TXC 310 was hard to start and did not run as well as others. They went on the tight side of spec adjusting the valves especially the exhaust side. Now the bike runs great and fires right up. Not saying this is your issue but it is worth a shot.
