  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

2011 te449

Coaxial - Traction - System - C.T.S. is the traction control system on a 449/511.

On a normal motorcycle (non-CTS), when accelerating, the swing arm lifts and squats the motorcycle down in the rear. On the 449, upon acceleration, the swing arm is forced downward, actually lifting the motorcycle rear end and forcing the rear tire to gain control and traction. Normally when traction is lost, letting off the throttle will allow the wheel to regain traction. On the 449, more throttle allows a regain in traction. The 449 is a magnificent hill climber, feels like magical traction all the way up.

The 449 and 511 are unique and wonderful bikes and they get that way with minimal upgrades. Proper exhaust (I use the stock TXC Akrapovic can on our racing 511 ...aint nobody pass us yet on a straightaway..and a modified TE muffler on my 449); latest ECU set #3 (here is where a dealer can really help) or the JD/Power Commander add on.

That is all it took to make a race winning TXC511, add JD tuner or ECU update and tune suspension to fit rider, add good rider (made better by the 511)...everything else is optional

These are not really upgrades in my eye, they were REQUIRED to make the bike run correctly.

While I agree that the ecu upgrade may be required (Radar would disagree here), the combination with a stock exhaust will make the 449 run correctly and is all that is needed to produce a great running motorcycle. But an aftermarket exhaust, tuner or ecu replacement with a pcv or baazaz are really upgrades from stock which will yield far more power and add utility, but are not required.
Speaking of upgrades, how's that beta working out for you?

So they are Service Packs in Microsoft parlance :)
I am using upgrade in the IT sense in which any improvement of the base delivered product is an upgrade, whether or not that was simply to address an original deficiency or an enhancement or additional feature.

And I rode mine for several months as delivered from the dealer before I made any changes. It had deficiencies but it was certainly rideable.

I test drove the 449 and really liked the way the bike rode. I got the bike for 5100 with only 350 miles. It already says race map II on the dash. Its all stock. I am going to do an oil change this weekend. What oil type should I use? Also The bike idle seems rather high. Is this normal, should i lower it? Any other tips for this 1st time husky owner.

A high idle is normal. Even though I got one of the magic 2011 bikes that actually runs good, I'm taking off my ecu and having Tinken work his magic on it with a map upgrade, I suggest you do the same.

At $40 its easily the best bang for your buck upgrade.

What started out as Windows ME became Windows XP after the tuner was installed...:D
You didn't like windows xp, so you bought a Mac? You could just upgrade your ecu, but it might make your Mac feel inferior :)

The high idle may be a band aid to reduce flame outs, too. At this point the ECU update to the #3 maps is looking like the best path for most to optimize the bike.

I will wait till I have at least 500 miles on the bike then have Tinken do the ECU upgrade for me. Will doing this upgrade lower the idle?

Map set #3 is more than just a fix for lower idle, popping and flame outs. It's a brand new fuel map curve and is going to change the entire power delivery to your 449/511. You will see gains off the bottom and afterburners on the top.
