  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

2011 TE 310 gearing question

Still busy with adding parts and breaking in new TE 310 2011. Has anyone left the stock rear 40 tooth sprocket?
I got the 50 tooth and chain with the bike but have not put it on. Wow the top speed is not great with the 40 rear. Mostly riding off road and need hill climbing ability but gees the top speed is not great. I got the 310 because I am 51 years young 5'6" 157 pounds and was tired of heavy CRF 450X. Any of you found a good combo with rear and counter sprockets? I only have 23 miles on my bike. Climbed a few small hills and gearing not terrible? Thanks.

Got to agree, I only have about 50 miles on mine but found the same, when on road between trails the bike is not really happy. Although it would be nice to put the 50 tooth on for the technical bits this would only make the road sections even worse.

David I have a TE310 2011 and had it delivered with the 40 tooth rear sprocket and did about 500 km with it on most of that riding was on summer tracks and back roads I got around 145 km out of a tank of fuel but whem I started to do some tight slower riding in an out of creek beds and single trail stuff the higher gearing was an issue and I kept stalling as well. I have now changed to the 50 tooth sprocket and it makes a big difference to the way the bike rides. I competed in a trial ride with lots of 1st to third gear stuff and the response was there. The engine works better in the hugher revs and I didnt stall at all. Give the 50 tooth ago you will then see what I mean. Good luck.

I rode my 10-te250 with the 40 tooth just to put 500-600 break in miles on it till it was time to hit the dirt. Then I ran the included 50 tooth for most of the time. I recently changed that to a 52 tooth and it made hill climbing a bit nicer. I didn't haveto keep therpm as much. Other than that the 50 was fine.

Now that I have a 11 te310, I can't see much need for more than the included 50 tooth.

I bought mine with the 50 tooth installed. Takes me 3 gears to get through an intersection and anything over 45 feels like I'm flogging the bike although it has tons of room left in the rpms. I wasn't sure I'd like it.

But my plan was 95% dirt for this bike, so I sacked up and waited until I could get some decent dirt time in. After a few trips to the best local dirt bike park, I'm pretty happy with the 50 tooth rear setup. The gearing provides a lot of options in the hills and trees.

Of course, in the open, the bike will suffer, but a 310 is kinda small for that kind of work anyways, right? A 450 might be better suited for that, but it's not going to do as well in the more technical terrain. There are always trade offs...

The bike doesn't like to be ridden in a timid manner. It handles and responds better if you ride it with a heavy hand.

I rode mine today for the first time. 50 tooth rear and all smog off. The bike is awesome. Obviously in the tight stuff it is great. Lots of wide open riding here and I just don't go that fast. That is ok.

I am thinking of staying with the 13 front sprocket and going to a 45 tooth rear for the opening riding just to get a bit more speed and fuel milage and when I compete I will swap back to the 50 so I will let you know how that goes in a couple of weeks time. My friend also gave me a 42 tooth that he got with his 510 so I might try that as well down the track.

I'am going to try a 47 tooth. Lets compare what we find power wise/miles to low fuel warning/ speed at 5000rpms
stock 13t front/full power-up done
40t-milage 90 to low fuel warning/1st gear to tall for single track woods riding/around 50mph@5000rpms
50t-milage 70 to low fuel warning/6 gear to low for dirt road riding/around 35mph@5000rpm
47t-?

I run a stock counter sprocket. When breaking in my bike around neighborhood I climbed a few hills with the 40 tooth. It wasn't bad. Now I am only 157 and had no gear on but I tell you it makes me think. Maybe a 45 rear is the answer for me. Obviously it depends on the riding one does. I still love the bike after my ride yesterday. With that 50 rear maybe it will force me to slow down a bit. Nothing like riding desert and fire roads tapped out on a 450. But can't have everything in life. Enjoy

Nice to hear you got 70 miles to low with the 50 tooth. With the stock tank on my 10-te250 I was only able to get 49 miles to empty. Nice to know they fixed the tank for 11.

Anybody try a 14 tooth counter sprocket and 50 on the rear?
I'm thinking I could leave the 50 on the rear and just swap out the CS 13 for the 14 pretty easily (and I wouldn't have to swap the chain either) depending on the type of riding I'm doing.
Right now I'm running 13/52 way to low, it's screaming at 50mph, no good for some dual sport rides but great for tight rocky/rooty New England trails.

Another word of warning I was putting the backend back together and changed the 40 tooth sprocket back to the 50 and went to adjust the chain and the righ hand side adjuster bolt went tight and I tried to free it up wit WD40 going in and out but with out luck and it snapped off now I have pull it all off again and I am taking the swingarm to a machine shop today to get the broken thread out. I pulled the other side bolt out and it had started to rust on the threads as well so make sure you pull these bolts all the way out and put anti sieze on them. I run the 40 tooth during the summer as we do some long distances rides and then go back to the 50 in winter for the tight fun stuff so it hasn't been that long since i had these bolts wound out that far but it is not good when they break off. With the 40 t on the rear I get about 140 km out of the tank and back to about 90 km with the 50 so i would be interested in the 13/47 combo.

I tried one (off a TC I think it was) and the chain runs seriously close to the clutch slave cylinder , in fact it just started to rub a wear mark on it slightly, and once I got a small stone stuck between the chain and the slave and couldn't move the bike(luckily it was parked at the time). As for how it went, not too good in tighter stuff and not much difference in speed. I reckon a 47 rear would be good for open flowing stuff, but no good for single.

Mine is 13/48 and @55mph RPMs are ~8300 or so (I'm trying to recall). I would definitely drop down below 47 if I was to be doing a lot of road riding. For trails and gravel roads etc, the 13/48 seems pretty good.
