2011 SMS 630 Initial Impressions

I just picked up my 2011 SMS 630 and having owned the '09 SM 610 I can comment on the new bike vs. the '09 model:
Overall fit and finish much improved (gotta love those Germans)
Seating position lower with better rearview mirror visibility
Seat is more comfortable
Sidestand is a lot better
Engine is much smoother and quieter
Power has more bottom torque with better throttle response
Fuel injection is a little rough but I'm sure will improve (no stalling so far)
Clutch and shifting is smoother
Brake power is the same
Handling is quicker due to shorter wheelbase

The break-in guidelines are much more lenient than with the 610 in that all they require is a thorough warm up with no heavy load on a cold engine and vary the engine speed for the first 4 hours.
My 610 was left completely stock and I would have to say that the newer bike, even though brand new, will have more power and torque.

Thats it for now, I'll keep everyone posted as the miles add up.

I will second that! I had an 08 610 and now im on a 2011 sm 630. What an amazing bike, I can't wait to get it broken in and piped up!

Just so we know for comparison purposes, you said your 09 610 was all stock. Does that mean it was never Powered Up???

So mine´s in Berlin. Only done a couple of hundred miles. Took me some time to get used to it (my prob, not the bike´s). `Tis VERY civilized and much more user friendly than my previous. Very quiet zorst (no bleeding ears), very good access to fuses etc. (the single key is a very good idea). Got over the initial panic when there was a bit of a whine from the top end (it´s gone now. Must have been `cos it´s new) and spluttering in slow traffic (which I´ve got used to. Sure I´ll get it sorted with the new Arrow cans). Plan to rid it of the cat and replace the heat shields with carbon one day. The bike´s deceptive in that the power´s all there, but it´s so civilized that you just don´t notice.

Just so we know for comparison purposes, you said your 09 610 was all stock. Does that mean it was never Powered Up???

My '09 was bone left bone stock including the ugly smog canister, there was no power up kit included when I purchased the bike. My 2010 SMS630 has the smog canister as well and there is no power up kit.

So what are you waiting for? Stock is good, I guess, but you can get
so much more out of the motor with a little smog removal and powerup
mods.

Curious to hear more since this is about as apples to apples as you can get from a 610. Once the 630's are out in more #'s and IF I actually start using my current 610 (put all of 50 miles on it in 3 months) a 630 may end up in my stable in the next year or so. I do not think I could ride a stock Husky again though.

Mine is no where near stock and if I got a 630, it wouldn't be either.

Agree! Just as soon as parts are available:

Twin Arrows, whip off those metal heat shields & replace with carbon, tuning kit, off with the pillion pegs and anything else that adds weight. Thinking of anti hop clutch. Until then, I´ll know fairly well whether I need the guarantee or risk making changes.

Test rode a new 630 TE yesterday. Only 4 miles and no place to get up past 40mph.
(some negative comments, but I still want one pretty badly)

Noticed quite alot of heat coming up through the seat in stop and go traffic. Would it help removing the catalytic converters and placing some sort of heat-sheild below the seat and above the crossover?

The hanldebars are not set up for standing on the pegs on the 630.
First gear is very short, and the bike is real snappy with that big engine.

630 is officially "My Bike"

Has now had its first service (oil was clean and no swarf or metal particles). Arrow pipes (and their black box) are fitted and the lambda sensor is disconnected with the new plug in place. The new sound is superb (no bleading ears but more sonorous) and the Arrows are much lighter than the stock exhaust. `Tis now a totally different bike. No more surging in low gear and very, very sprightly at all speeds. The suspension was reset by an expert to get rid of high speed wobble. Have done 170 km/h and it can certainly do a lot more.The slipper clutch is a luxury and I could have done without it (always wanted one). There´s nothing technical I don´t like about the 630. The steering lock and the lock on the saddle are definite improvements, as are the removeable panels that don´t need adhesive stickers.



As to looks: am still waiting for carbon heat shields for the zorst pipes and I´ll have to do something about the rear plate holder. Don´t particularly like the look of all that metal along the side. And don´t particularly like white on a bike. But am certain that carbon parts will appear some day (hopefully soon).

I cut my plate holder down with a dremel and drilled holes for the plate bracket up higher:

Once you re-pipe and richen it up accordingly it should be much cooler. On my '07 610, which lacks the extra twin pipe crossover, the LV3 exhaust pipe runs very cool (and the mid-pipe does also relatively) and so I do not notice that much heat rising up, and it has never been uncomfortable. I leave the stock header/mid-pipe sheilds on also, which I am sure helps more.

I am 6'1 and put a under bar mounted steering stabilizer and taller lower clamps to add more rise for better posture on the pegs.

Dialed in the suspension with lighter springs, very nice ride, mine is a keeper.
