  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

2010 TE510 gearbox problems + glowing headers - problem?

Neesmo31

Husqvarna
A Class
Hey all I am new to this site and just thought I may put up some questions about my new husky TE510. I bought this brand new last week with about 1 kilometer on the clock from a local bike shop.

The problem is the gearbox is very sticky between 1st and 2nd, as in it will false neutral all the time going between these gears. Very annoying as if your coming from 6th down to 1st, it will be 6th, 5th, 4th, 3rd, 2nd........neutral......grab fronts hard......click.....1st.....

The other thing that I thought I would check on is how hot the bike runs. I came home from a bit of a ride and took the back streets to my house. So just putting through town not really under it that much, but when I got home both headers were glowing red. Dull, but still noticeable. Should i be worried about this? Its been fully derestricted.

Thanks all guys in advance. :)

You know that as the bike wears in,it will shift smoother, run better and generally just start working a lot smoother than when brand new. I have always found that once "broken in", I mean the whole bike engine, suspension, brakes, bearings, even the seat everything about the bike feels better. A lot of what I'm saying is of course if you have the correct springs, proper sag set for you and general "ergonomics" set up for you. The headers glowing ,they run lean and your FI can be adjusted if need be,usually after you have some time on the bike. The question I have for you about the missed shifts, how big are your boots or feet ? I found that when I changed my shifter from stock to a longer shift lever, I wear 13-14 depending on the boots, the missed shift problem was eliminated. I had a hard time getting my foot or toe under the tip. There are several sponsers on this site that have what your looking for, if that's the case. I find a lot of what I need at Motosportz and the driven shifter has worked well for me. Welcome to the site there is a wealth of information about your bike here.

Thanks for the intro mate. Yeah its got about 450kms on the clock so far, and the miss shifts happen wether or not im wearing riding boots, normal shoes, other mates riding the bike - still does it grr...

But yeah hopefully get into mine as much as everyone on here.

Next thing that will happen to it will be to get a mate to make me full carbon fiber 'fairings' (well all the plastics). So should look a touch different to the norm... :)

I got my new 510 mid summer and it shifted hard from first to second
I had to drop my shifter one notch down to get a better grab on it
the more miles i got on the bike the smother it shifted, yours should also
change your oil at 200 miles and again at 500 change filters also, this helps
As for the header glowing you might be a little lean Good luck
The 510 is a great motor.

dump the oil and put in decent stuff. I could tell by how shitty my gears were just how much it needed an oil service. glowing is ok if not bright red but as said, possibly new motor and will loosen up but you can get it checked with an Ibeat .

Cheers guys :)

The lad who I bought it off did the exact same thing - dropped it a notch and it seems okay now (will have to put it through its paces though).

Also I changed the oil and filter at 150km's to Motul 7100, and will be done again at 500km's.

Thanks for your help again lads.

After a ride yesterday afternoon - still does it. So my brand new bike goes into the shop to get fixed. Not very happy with this outcome. At least its on warrantee.

Also has just developed an oil leak between the cases which is annoying me a little bit. Would have thought a bit better from Husky being a brand new bike....

Could anyone shed some light on what this gearbox issue could be? Basically very sticky gear changes, false neutrals between 1st and 2nd and especially 2nd to 1st. I know the bike is new but I did all the proper break in procedures for it.

Also a thing to note is about 2 kilometeres after I picked up the bike from BRAND new, it got stuck in 6th. I had to stop the bike and rock it around while working the clutch/shifter to get it out.

Hi mate, Ive got a 310 (besides the difference of 200 CC's the bikes are nearly identical)

Not sure about your 6th gear problem sorry.. Like what has been said here earlier, everything becomes smoother the more it is ridden.

But I have had the same issue between 1st and 2nd (and still do sometimes). I found its mostly my riding style, if I laboured it around it rarely went from 1st to 2nd easily. If i am a bit more agressive with the revs just before shifting to second it is much more compliant and requires less effort to shift. Basically I make sure to give the throttle a bit of a blip before up shifting. This makes all up shifting easier.

I also notice that my header also glows slightly (only notice it if riding at night), and I have the occasional popping/backfiring but I keep an eye on the condition of my spark plug and there are no issues that I can tell. Check out http://www.ngksparkplugs.com/tech_support/spark_plugs/faqs/faqread.asp
It will give you a rough idea of whats happening in your motor, especially if your bike is running lean/hot. If there is a lean condition happening fuel injection settings take <5 mins for the dealer to do, ive had mine changed slightly in the past.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for that. Just got it back from the dealership. Nothing 'wrong' inside the gearbox, but still false neutraling still. Will be re-asessed in 3 weeks and will go from there.

Was tuned on the computer before I bought it as it was derestricted. Dealer said that them being a light cherry is perferctly normal as they are a fairly serious bike.

I have noticed that revving it higher will produce better changes but do not like doing this until its been warmed up completely.

Hey all. Wanted to chime in quickly. I purchased an 06 te 510 in 09 with 600 miles on it. when i test rode the bike it was running like crap. popping exsessively, backfiring like a gun. We agreed on price and i brought the bike home . ihad reservations but was confident it was a simple problem. when (de)smoging the bike i noticed a small tear in the intake manifold boot. 15bucks later i had a freebreathing beast(for a good price). i also installed a jd jet kit and have noticed my headersslightly amber when putting around. plug looked good . the oil used in the bike affects shifting properties and your bike is still not broken in yet. the 6th gear thing is def not right. good luck. ct slacker

$15! My local dealer wanted $140 AUD for the rubber intake boot on my bike (the one that joins to the intake manifold and stems from the throttle body). I am guessing it was cracked due to fatigue, possibly due to the throttle body being relatively unsecured. I superglued the crack closed and all has been well for 4000 km

Also I recently came across a guy that had a "Brand New" 2010 450. It had been in storage for over 18 months and it was his first real ride on the thing. He said that when he purchased it he put about 50 km on it and then just put it in the garage. Point being that the day before I saw him riding he recovered the bike from storage to find it jammed in gear, cant remember which one, but he had to fart about quite a bit to disengage it and get it moving freely.
