  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

2010 te250 Oil Coming Out Of Airbox.

shanzy

Husqvarna
hi guys i have a 2010 te250 that i havent ridden in a couple months and i noticed today a small pool of oil sitting under the swingarm and after tracing it it seems like its coming from the airbox.
Im just wondering is this a big problem? or have i just overfilled the oil? what oil do you use on your bike? i used motul 300v 10w40 double ester is that the right stuff to use? if so how much do you put in when you change the oil? sorry if this is a stupid question my first bike so go easy on me.

Shanzy I have a 2011 te310 which has the same basic engine as the 250 I use Motul 7100 10W60 oil the engine holds 900mls including filter change but you can check the oil level easy by the sight glass next to the kick starter. As for the oil coming out of the air box there is a good chance it is the oil that has drain out of the air filter foam. If your bike has been sitting for a while and the filter element had a good oiling at the last clean then the oil has most likely just made its way to the bottom of the air filter foam and started to drip out. Remove the filter and check it out you will soon see if most of the filter oil is at the bottom. Give it a clean and reoil. I hope this helps.

The engine breather hose goes to the airbox, the vented air from the engine has oil mist, it condenses on the smooth plastic of the airbox interior and runs down to the holes in the bottom of the airbox.

On oil changes....if it says a specific amount, please initially rely on that measurement and not the sight window. Oil gets trapped in nooks and crannys and it is definiteley there and reallly doing its job with the bike running. With a small amout like 900 ml it is easy for as little as 50-100 cc sitting in some nooks and crannys and pooled around drainage holes and not going all the way down to effect the sight window. It is our gut reaction to say "I know it says 900 ml and I DID put in every drop of my pre measured 900 ml oil for the change and did not spill a drop but the sight glass looks low....lemme put in another 100 ml or so" This is the root cause for overfill and the reason the brether pukes it up into the airbox and it then drains out to the swingarm...very normal and enjoy your first bike and glad you chose Husky Bro!

I'm actually relieved to see that oil on the swingarm. I'm sure that I have plenty of oil in the engine.:D

Dont stress - Mine does that all the time. It did it over summer a fair bit, I think the (castrol foam filter oil) filter oil gets quite runny/less viscous when it heats up and so it just drips out of the bottom of the airbox onto the swingarm.

I also would imagine if you over oil the filter it would pool in the bottom of the filter and drain off.

thanks for all your help. this is my sight glass. too much oil? how high should it be?

The other thing that will cause the oil to run out of the air box(engine oil not air filter oil)is if you drop the bike on the right side with the engine running. The oil will be running from the top of the head cover on the right side to the air box via the crankcase vent tube. This is in addition to what has already been said(overfilling the engine at oil change). I usually premeasure the quantity of oil required and fill with as much as needed to get close to the top mark in the site glass, and then start the bike let it run for a minute and let it settle out after shutting it off. Then I check to see where it is and add if necessary to be somewhere betwen the 2 marks in the site glass(closer to the 3/4 full area). When the engine oil gets hot it will expand a little bit.

Boy, ain't that the truth! One time, so much oil got all over the swingarm and especially into the airbox after a particularly nasty spill on a hillside, that I could hardly get the engine started again and when I finally did, it smoked like a house on fire for a couple of minutes till all that oil got cleared out.

I was sure to check the oil level and add some oil right after I came in from the ride.

That used to be the case with the older engine. X-lite (2010) breather exits top of valve cover now and uses frame backbone as part of the plumbing. Tip over on the right doesn't matter now. Kind of nice.

I think this is one of the reasons the 310 has the oil drain line from the frame back to the engine oil drain plug as I have dropped my 310 lots of times with out any oil going to the air intake pipe.

thanks for all the advice guys. but im still stressing about this. i think when i changed the oil i filled it up with about 1100 ml so that is too much? will it do any damage? how full should the sight glass be? mine is about 3/4 full

Forget the sight glass and put in there what your manual says.

I recommend the opposite. Fill according to sight glass, start it to circulate the new oil, shut off and let sit 5 minutes after warmed up and adjust oil level to be between marks on the glass. This is assuming you have a level parking area when viewing the glass. Glass should be viewed with bike upright, not resting on kickstand. The sight glass is your only valid level indication.

+1, 100% valid, the sight glass sets the oil level at the correct level to the spinning clutch pack and the oil pump pick up.

If his sight glass is having him put in 1100ml, it's too much.

Either way I should have been more clear. I start by adding in the amount the manual recommends. Then I warm the engine and take it for a short spin to get the oil circulating throughout the engine and transmission. Bring it back to the garage and let it sit for a few minutes so the oil gets back to the bottom as much as it can. THEN center the bike and check the sight glass to make sure it's in the correct approx area. As long as its not too far off and I know I have in the exact amount the manual recommends, leave it alone.

The reason I don't like going off the sight glass only is-
