  • Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

so pretty much ever since i got this bike its been a plug eating monster pretty much every ride or every other ride it eats one can't seem to figure out, Ima a fast rider and constantly clearing out the plug as i ride. I feel like I've tried everything 50:1 45:1 40:1 up and down the needle jd jet kit
anyone have any idea or tips? went through over 20 plugs at least its getting quite old.
 
Sorry to hear that. Have you checked the float level and the float needle for damage? Leaking float needle and/or seat and fuel too high in the bowl can lead to rich running and fouled plugs. Also check to see if the spark looks strong. I have read that bikes with Ducati ignition tend to have more problems than the 2009 and older bikes. I've had my 2000 WR250 for years and rarely ever foul a plug. Well, it did foul a plug once after I first moved to Spokane WA. from Florida. I recently installed a 300 kit in my bike and I'm using the newer style TMX38 with a JD Jet kit. I followed the instruction in the kit and jetted it using the recommendations for 3000'-5000' 410 main, 32.5 pilot, red needle in the 2nd grove from top, and about 2 turns out on the air screw. 40:1 Maxima 927. Seems to run great. Hope you can find what works for your bike!
 
Good advise Dirtdame. The only plug I fouled was also a non iridium one. Now I'm also using a NGK plug cap and NGK iridium plug.
 
I'll check the float level, i only checked that it works properly.
I bought a jd jet kit and made the bike run better but fouls plugs even faster now..
I use motorex for the oil would a different brand matter?
I used just the completion ngk br8eg i tried the cheaper version it actually lasted longer
I'll look into ordering some iridium plugs. feel like it should've been such a simple problem i have never even seen anyones spark plugs foul and i spent more on plugs than it costs for a top end ha..

I let my piston go quite a while, about 5 seasons...really too long, but I do a lot of low speed riding. The original piston had the "death smile" on the back of it from the intake port. I use the stock Mikuni with a JD Racing jet kit in it. I also run a larger main jet than stock. The bike starts and runs good.

ahh never heard of the death smile ha ,
i ride pretty heavy tillamook rain forest oregon and washington type of terrain so just wondering how long i should be running a piston with the riding i do,
ya i didn't realize till recently when i was going to purchase a JD jt kit that my carburetor is a pwk not stock,
i adjusted the carb float proper adjust the jd kit according to my elevation,
adjusted spark plug gap according to manual

ordered the cap and the iridium plug going,
going to ride it sometime this week and see if it fouls again it usually ends up being at the same exact point through a single track.
 
When you say up and down the needle jet kit do you mean you've tried different needle heights ? on 2nd slot for example ?

yeah, so i rode monday night for about an hour, bikes never felt better and no plug fouls for once i hope i finally figured it out after a year of ownership. iridium plug came in and waiting on the new spark boot and going to test that a
 
what about the rings do you replace those?
Of course.. they come with the new piston. I never waste my time tearing down an engine to replace just one component. I know some people replace just their rings, but by the time I tear down my top end, it's time for a complete kit with a top end bearing as well.
 
^^^Yes indeed! Wiseco and Vertex have complete kits except the small end bearing. They are a better value and you do the job right the first time.
