  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

2009 Vs 2012 Te310

I hope this is the correct place to post this if not I apologize in advance.
I've got an opportunity to buy a brand new (0 miles) 2009 te310 for about 5,500 ttl drive it off the lot.
But before I drop the hammer I'd like to get some insight from the people who know these bikes best. In y'alls minds what are the pros and cons of the 2009 yr model vs the new and improved 2012 or 11. The main factor that got me looking at a husky in the first place was the light weight of the newer engines. But it's my understanding that the 09 has the old style (heavier) engine. And the slightly larger gas tank on the 12 is a plus also. But at almost 3 grand difference the 09 is sounding pretty sweet.
Any imput would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance guys and girls

I paid $6399 for my 2011 TE310 in December of 2011. That is a good price but I have heard of guy's paying less. You can still pick up 11 TE250 which would be very close power wise for $5,199 from Heinen's Motorsports which apparently isn't the best dealership but price matter and if your shipping who cares. From 2011 to 2012 there isn't much that changed. If it was my money i'd buy the 2011 but then again I haven't ridden an older motor to compare to mine.

The drawback with the '11 TE250 is that going to 310 is now much more complicated. While you could previously buy the kit with piston/cylinder, the newer engines are bored AND stroked. Now the upgrade would require splitting the cases, and the parts will be more money as well. If you're not concerned about that, then the '11 TE250 Tessier mentions sounds like a great deal.

Regarding the 2009, I've got a 2009 TE250 and while I like it, I've recently considered updating because the choice of auto-clutch for the 2009 250/310 is very limited. AFAIK the older Rekluse Z-Start (non-pro) which is no longer available, or EFM (which requires modification to your existing clutch) are the only options.

Personally, I like that I can go to a 310 with the Athena kit, but hate that I'm so limited in choice of auto-clutches.

Maybe neither of the above issues affect you (especially if you're buying a 310 anyway)

Tessier, that's a nice price for your '11 TE310. I'd be on that in a heartbeat here. Cheapest I've seen is $6999 here, but that's for a demo. I'd also prefer to buy from the same dealer I bought my '09 from, Ross Rocher Sales (ScottyR on this forum). I could get the '11 TE250 from him for $6399, but again, the bore and stroke thing makes me not want to do that.

Decisions, decisions...

I have a 09 310 and love it. I just use it for trail riding, my going fast days are long gone so it works fine for what I'm using it for. I still wish I had a 2 smoke sometimes like a WR150.

Thanks for the imput. I probably won't slap an auto clutch on it any time soon if ever. Getting a day pass to spend money on my toys from my wife to be seems to be getting harder and harder. I figure I'm doing good just getting the bike.

That is a nice price Tessier. Maybe I'll hold out a bit longer to see what kind of deal I can get on a 2011.

Excuse my ignorance but are kayaba shocks much of an improvement from the previous yrs shocks. I really don't know that much about different shocks other than how to compress thefront and pull a really sweet indo fakey to face plant while my less than helpful buddies explain in detail how they would have done it better

The older models had a combo of Kayaba(frt) and Sachs (rear). I think everybody had good things to say about the Sachs, just nice to have common suspension front and rear, since they should be designed to compliment each other.

I think the main benefit with the '12 going to the kayaba is they've tweaked it. I don't know if it's a different spring but the settings have been adjusted based on feedback on how the '11 performed with the Sachs. IMO, both are fine shocks unless you just GOTTA have Ohlins.

BigWooly if your looking for a deal on the 2011's now is the time. The pickin's are getting slim out there and I am pretty sure that I picked up one of the last 310's if not the last. After I bought mine Husky pulled the deal from there website and the dealer I bought it from had a deal in place to trade it to another dealer south of us till I stepped in just in the nick of time. If you look at the amount off from MSRP on these bikes I highly doubt that your going to be getting anything cheaper.

Strike while the iron's hot and it's glowing red my friend!

If i had a choice of either a 2009 or 2012, I would rather the 2009. Thats what i have now. Ive riden the 2011. They are a lite bike, but the power is still the same output as the earlyer 310. What i love about the 09 model is as follows. Easy to remove the spark plug incase of droping bike in the water--Starter motor easy to remove and refit--They are so easy to do valve checks (No removal of cams and no special tools needed)-- And the water pump comes of in seconds. You could do all these things on the side of the trail if need be. They are so easy to work on.

I've have an 09 with 6000 miles on it and it's been a bullet proof and fun bike. I've ridden a 2010 250 with the Xlite engine. Seemed pretty similar to my bike. So unless you need the latest and greatest,,,the 09 is a nice bike. A little heavier and a bit smaller gas tank, but I can get over 50 miles in easy trail riding. I'm not a racer anymore, just a trail rider, but I have no trouble keeping up with my friends.

09 has the bottom end that was used for the 450 and 510, so it is bullet proof. I have an 09 and 10 love them both. I like the newer11/12 bike as it is a tad lighter and a tad more flickable. However I find the bottom end is softer and as a trail bike I use bottom to mid more than mid to top end which is where the newer models are pitched.

Thanks for the info all. I've decided to go for the 09. Easy to work on is more important than the weight and I like the idea of steel valves instead of titanium. Wish me luck. Hopefully soon I will be joining the ranks of husky owners and I too will have that ridiculous grin on my face as I rip down the trail. Thanks again for the help
