  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

20 MPG on a TE 511?

At least he doesn't have the boob tank on the katoom.

why does it get such crappy mileage? I get 4-8 MPG more than that on my 165 or 250.
It gets better than that but when you throw in about 20 3rd gear pinned 500-700 foot hill climbs it knocks it way down ! I have done 79 miles on the stock 2.6 before. It just depends on how much dumps out and how you twist I guess !

2013 TE 511. FMF exhaust. Map #3.14/52 gearing.
That's the way I am setup, it's a great desert/mountain/technicals/racing setup for the 511. But it's not for high speed desert or long distance high way use. You can also improve your mileage by adding a powercommander and a button on the bars. This way you can run a power map and a mpg map, on the fly to toggle between 25mpg and 45mpg.

My Husky will beat your KTM up any hill with half throttle. Just say'n.

I like the ktm 300, it's a good motocross bike and it also works well in the desert (I know because I had one). But it's not a go-to solution for high powered desert racing or hill climbing like the ktm 450, 525, Husky 449, 501 or 511. The 449/511 has traction control that makes it a wonderful hill climber. The ktm 525 reminds me of my old husky chainsaw, you can beat it to death and it keeps going.
I do rather enjoy the testosterone hill climbing battle, but it's not as fun knowing who's going to win in advance. ;)

I'm still looking daily for a late model YZ 250 or 250/300 EXC on Craigslist. I want a dedicated lightweight woods bike that I can beat the living piss out of and be able to fix it cheap. Up here in NorCal (at least where I ride), there's not a lot of flat out desert ripping. I would go for a WR 300 but I'm not sure I can fix it cheap.
