  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

250-500cc 1992 WXC360 NO SPARK

So you have checked volt out put on stator, next is to check the coil, take the ht lead and check coil isnt open circuit with multi meter, now check your ht lead is continuos the lead n plug cap are cheap as so i wold replace it any way, your plug is new right? Did you put the gap to .5mm -25thou? Thats where it should be and NEVER rule new stuff out as duff.
Have all had a bad sammich from servis so why assume a plugs good could of got cracked insulation been dropped damp stored thrown from a plane.
You never know.

getting back to your problem
he PVL systems a reasonably reliable, remember nothing electrical is without problem
you said it ran then would not restart, connections are a good place to start
unplug the ignition and clean the terminal ends, after this use dielectric grease to keep the contacts clean
it might just be that simple

Last night I took the stator out and found a bit of rust on a corner of the field plates
I washed the bike very lightly after it ran the other day and had not put new sealant on the sport where the wires go into the engine case, so some got in and I think that's the issue. Cleaned off the rust and put it back together but still no spark. I found a manual for pvl and the stator and coil test within resistance tolerances, coil was 4.89 kohms and stator around 165 ohms. Cdi can't be tested but it's probably fine too... Need to figure it out today as tomorrow my buddies are going riding hahaha

Alright. This thread has a happy ending. This morning I put the original plug back in and got some sparking. Put the bike back together wouldn't start. Went to the bike shop bought new good plugs. No spark again!? Thought about it, the pickup on the stator is most likely what soaked up the most moisture when I washed it. So, set the bike out in the sun with the stator cover off, so it would get warm and dried out. It worked. Got spark and bike started so time to ride.

definitely need to seal that side cover

Water and electrics dont mix i had my bike kick back so hard aftee a river crossing stall it ran backwards believe it or not.
Seal the rubber boot around the wires going in and gasket the cover on but leave the drain hole open.
Or not doesnt really matter i suppose, but mines open.

Alright so I thought it was just moisture in it and it was fixed... But I have still been having intermittent no spark issues. It will have spark and start and run great for a day. It will have spark for 24 hours after that, but then it wont. I can leave the stator cover off and it will sit for 3 days and have no spark, and when I check the 4th day it has spark again... weird... I listed it for $1000 on my local CL with this issue, if I can find a new stator it'll be back at $1500. Someone buy it!

check the kill switch and wire

Kill switch has nothing to do with it. I disconnected it and that made no difference, bought a new one anyway because the factory one was looking a bit ratty. It still has spark sometimes and runs great when it does. This is what I plan to replace the ignition with if it doesn't sell as is. The rotor number is the only thing that doesn't match up in the new kit on ebay, but the one on the bike is fine.

That pvl kit includes a rotor or flywheel.
Its inside the stator ring its a non lights ignition ive wanted to cr my wr for a while thats how i would do it with hpi or pvl.

the oddity to these is the taper and diameter for the Cagiva crank end
the ignition will work but the taper might be a problem

Also owning a '92 360 with a shoddy ignition and speaking from experience I can recommend this kit from power dynamo: https://www.powerdynamo-shop.com/shop/show_product.php?cPath=8_95&products_id=329

It is a direct replacement for the motoplat "mini-4" with the correct taper on the flywheel, it also has a lighting coil with a voltage regulator which was a plus for me. It's a bit more expensive than the Ebay PVL kit mentioned but there is no guess work. No affiliation of course...just thought I'd share.
