• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

1988 250 WR, down shifting from 3rd to nuetral?

My 1988 250 WR had it's first outing yesterday at the Cookardinia Vinduro in southern New South Wales, and while it is a great bike to ride, I have an issue downshifting from 3rd expecting to engage 2nd gear, only to find myself in neutral, if I upshift I find second gear, or if I downshift again I find first, so it's skipping second gear and going straight into neutral.
While talking to another Husky rider at the event, it was suggested that the small spring (16 11 684-01) on the shift rack that engages the shift drum may have lost tension and need replacing, sounds logical?
I can't think of any other scenario that could cause this issue, has anyone here found the same problem?
Tony.

i randomly broke that spring on a ride..that sucked..if you are getting a false neutral i would strongly suspect it stretched.

It's not actually getting a false neutral, but going into neutral, downshift and it's in first, upshift and it's in 2nd. It's like a lack of tension on the shift drum is allowing it to skip second and go down to neutral.
I hope that makes sense?
Tony.

im thinking the something is wrong with the shift drum, not just the spring then.

Spring is ordered and will the first and easiest thing to try, if that doesn't fix it then out it comes!

thats what im starting to suspect. i have seen a few cases where that ball get jammed into the case and gets stuck there..

Tony, after studying on this a bit more I'm thinking the issue has to be related to the shift drum pins or shift drum itself. You described an issue that only occurs while down shifting and only between 3 going to 2. It works well everywhere else. So we are narrowed down to one spot on the drum. If the issue relates to part 20 or 22 from the previous pic it would seem reasonable that the issue would manifest itself in other shifting scenarios as well. Seems the only unique parts are the pins and perhaps a bad spot on the drum. I suspect the pins would see more wear.
Very interested to see the resolution for this one!

The number 22 isn't catching one gear shift to stop it, she's shifting two gears. Sounds like a pin came out of the shifter drum #32.

I just remembered that I took this pic for a friend who had lost a pin that stopped him upshifting past 3rd gear, it looks intact to me......

that was then...this is now. it could have failed, bent or fallen out....only 10 months to the 10 year anniversary of Harrow, best get those spanners a spinnen..:D

That was it's first ride since that pic was taken, but I have decided to split the motor unless I find something obvious while disassembling it.
Tony.

If a pin fell out and the hex bolt came loose I'd loctite it. If a pin didn't fall out. Number 18, 20, 22 isn't stopping the shifter drum. She's shifting two gears. I say pull the clutch cover the problem is fixable right there. It's in the shifting system. The gears in the case is a simple design. Nothing would allow it to shift two gears. That I can understand.

Note, the older cases in the mid to late 70's I seen a shifting pin on the fork break where the little steel roller goes on due to fatigue. I was double shifting it when third showed up in neutral. She finally locked up. Oops broken fork. This is why I suggest buying extra parts if your gonna ride them we have to fix them. This was life before here and sleezebay. Hmmm third to neutral.
