    WR = 2st Enduro & CR = 2st Cross

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

250-500cc 1987, enduro vs XC model 430?

Can some of the old timers out there remind me of all of the differences between these two models, the '87 XC vs Enduro model, 430? A quick Google didn't help me much.

Trying to figure something out, thanks!

forks ,4,5, sixth gear & ignition are the biggies what do you want to know?

Thanks Troy for the help. Actually, I didn't realize there was even that much difference. Found an 87 430 Enduro, good shape, not awesome or pristine, but potentially good enough, and wanted to know how much different it is vs the 87 XC430 I had a few years back.... so, whatever you know, glad to hear it!

I ride almost exclusively CA desert, so the XC was just in its element, but was wondering how the Enduro (is it WR?) stacks up against it, and whether or not I should just wait for another xc430 or 500 to come on the market...and hold on the Enduro.

Lower top speed compared to XC trans, forks smaller diameter? Ig not as hot... whatever you know...?

THANKS!

the biggest difference was the shorter suspension and the lighting
they put noise shields on the exhaust to quite them
the gearbox is the same
if you are buying a used 87 good luck on plastic, especialy the rear fender, I am looking for a clean 87 WR rear fender myself
I currently have an 87XC and WR in my garage, both are apart for repairs

all you need to make an XC is a rear fender, shock and forks
what does the bike look like?

Interesting... ok, so biggest things are lowered suspension, rear fender and light.

I am NOT a fan of fender on these, or the light. I dig the XC look MUCH more. I didn't realize the rear fender on the Enduro was brutal to find. I know the XC was a cinch to pick up new when I had it. Shrouds find them on ebay now.

As for suspension, what, like 1-2" shorter? Wonder if this will not ride as stable and as smooth as the XC I had. The thing was like butter down the large desert washes and utility roads, stupid stable....

Even if I just had to pick up those pieces, it will cost more overall than to just wait maybe for an XC..and be done with it... Hard to say, just wanted to know what the exact differences were to see if there was any reason to have further interest in it.

the interesting thing is that it is not as it seems
the 4th, 5th and 6th gears are the same for 250, 400, 430 and 500
the big differences are primary gears 250 is alone 400 and 430 are the same 500 is alone
the 1st, 2nd and third gears are different in a 250 vs a 400, 430 or 500
the CR gearboxes a totally different animal and 5 speed to boot
