  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

1982 xc430 kickstart skipping and locking engine

For some reason my kicker feels like it is skipping some teeth once in a while and also completely locks engine sometimes while kicking. All seemed fine until I put on the newer dogleg kicker and kicked it a few times. I can move kicker back and forth a little and it frees up. Not sure what happened....I have not taken off left side cover yet. I hope it's a simple issue?!

I will check that but not sure what to look for other than the obvious. How would the pre-tension cause the kicker to lock up and skip teeth?

Ok. Makes sense. I'm just curious how I may have lost the pre load . I did replace kicker but used a vise grip to keep the shaft from moving while I replaced. Will pull cover and see what I find. Could the spring tension cause the whole thing to lock up?

sometimes the socket where the kick pawl lives gets worn and the pawls gets cocked, its hard to say. better yet take a few pics of inside that cover.

as justintendo says take a few pics
it might be a coincidence at best, you replaced the kicker and something else failed
as he says pictures, also the main case where the kick shaft rides

Could I be off a spline or two? When I did get it started' I heard rattling that I thought was detonation but didn't have that before I changed kicker

The little pawl is out of position it's hitting the gear. The pawl should retract as the kick starter hits it's fully up stop position.

You can try moving it one notch but pulling the case will let you see where the pawl is. Mine is just at the point where it will drop into the kick gear. If you go one notch too far the kicker engages half way thru the stroke.

I'd remove the clutch cover to see exactly what your adjusting and to see if any parts are bad and need to be replaced.

The shift shaft and kicker assembly will all come out with the case cover, correct? No need to remove shifter and kickstart?

Correct

Correct, just the cover retaining hex screws. And no need to drain oil, just tip the bike on its side.

Great thanks! Another question for everyone. My dog leg kicker positions my foot perfectly on the point of my footpeg on the down stroke. Even with MX boot it hurts when the inside or outside (depending if I use left or right leg to kick) of my foot hits the peg squarely in the point/corner. I almost wish I had a way to temporarily lock the footpeg in the folded up position when I start the bike. The problem is the need to kick this big bore hard in order get it to fire......when you have bruises on the inside of the foot, the brain kinda' tells you otherwise. I put on the straight kicker from later model but it hits my side panel and also hits the swingarm bolt. Not sure why the dog leg is positioned to land right on the edge of peg. Any suggestions?

my cr500 dog leg kicker clears the back of the peg by about a finger width . if i put my boot half on the kicker i can kick it right to the bottom and it starts first kick .

chainsaw decomp also helps

do not pull the kicker off before the side case, it is meant to be left on.
i personally hate the dogleg kickers, and they put a large stress on the whole kick assembly, including the cases. put a straight kick lever off another 80s husky. steel or alum, doesnt really matter. the straight ones are much better in my opinion..the 82-88 husky kick levers will all swap..
